whne i take my 350 U down the road the steering wanders, and is really sensitve to any move ment. my 460 U is the same way but it pulls to the left. are my front ends or power steering units worn out? is that the nature of that steering system? thanks for any help

i red the procedure in the I&T book. how much slop or play should there be at the steering wheel before anything moves? i replaced the starter last month and when i took off the tie rod it was loose. the other side was loose on the splines too but that didn't help anything. last week end i helped by buddy pull the motor, transmission and transfer case out of his S-10 pickup. the front end was alittle light, even with the snow plow frame on it, but it picked it up with out any problem. its mostly a strong tractor, i've picked up a complete F-12 transmission, rear end with it. the steering donesn't bother me that bad, just as long as its safe to move in road gear. but it would be nice to remove some of the slop if i could. thanks

Do as "big fred" says. Trace down the slack and go from there. These other guys evidently have never driven a tractor with "hydrostatic" steering. They're the best driving systems(IMHO)except in road gear they hunt constantly. My 350U drives better.

The U's I have seen where not very good as far as steering. Some are bears to steer and some turn easy but will give you a heck of a ride if moveing very fast because of the slippy steering

...and for that reason I would never recommend a Ute for the National lawnmower road race....lol

Got a 300U that I have been fixing up for a friend, set up a bale fork for it the other day and tested it today. It sure does have good hyds, it lifted one of my bales with a little problem but it did get it up about 18 inches. My bales weigh around 2000-2500lbs. Got a little light on the front but it did move it ok. Sure wouldn't want to pop the clutch you might never get back down on the ground LOL

For all the manueverability of the Utes, they sure arent sports cars. When new they probably werent the greatest and 50 years later they sure arent even close to being great in that department.Somebody needs to reinvent the Ute steering box and come up with an all new modern substitute. We know C/IH doesnt care anymore, but there are plenty of 300/330/350/460 etc owners that do.

I have a 300U and I exchanged posts with a guy up north, about 2 years ago. He has a company that specializes in power steering for Ford and other tractors. They were going to do a 300U version, but they lost access to a "mule" unit to work on. I have thought about it myself, really would like a rotary system, not a steering cylinder. Just don't have time, tho. If it weren't for that, I believe that the 300U and the Oliver 550U would be tied for best uttility ever. The Ollie has the same problem. Easy.

Easy, check out surpluscenter.com . I believe they have everything to do just what you're talking about. Have considered changing one over myself.

I'm guessing it's out of alignment. Of course, your steering could be worn out, too, or you could have slop in any of half a dozen joints, including the drag link ends, the splines on the top of the spindles, which would cause problems even if the steering box itself was in perfect shape. The I&T manual for the 350U has the procedure for aligning the steering. First, though, check for slop in the system.
