OK,here's the situation:
My 300U has a loader(U34) with single acting lift cylinders and dual acting bucket cylinder. The fluid level is up to the full mark. The bucket cylinder works fine in both directions (it uses quick disconnects too),while the lift cylinder gets so far and starts sucking air.If you let off the lever and keep trying it again it will eventually go to the end of their travel, but it takes a while. The Fast Hitch works fine but will not lift the rear off the ground. There is no wild noises,no relief valve noises, just doesnt seem to want to go beyond taking the squat out of the tires. The fluid is aerated...nost likely thanks to the lift cylinders taking so much fluid and sucking air. There are no external leaks anymore, and water isnt getting inside.Could this all be caused by a dirty pickup screen? From what I see inside the reservoir its clean as a whistle in there...but of course you cant see the screen from the fill hole. There has been manifold pipe welding done where the block bolts to the reservoir, but I see no leaks where air could be getting in there.I blame 90% of these problems on the Single Acting lift cylinders. When they go down, whats to take ALL the fluid out of the hoses completely,so when you lift again the hoses are now empty and you've trapped a pocket of air? Would QDs on the lift hoses break up any air?

Paul: If this is a 300 with standard hydraulic resovoir, you need additional resovoir to operate fast hitch plus a loader with single action lift cylinders. Depending on how level tractor is you will start to run out of hydraulic as loader raises. Very hard on pump as it finishes the lift with a mix of air and oil.

I know of several 300's both Utility and Farmall that had this problem when new. My dad had this problem and dealer switched cylinders to dual action. While it improved that alone did not cure the problem. Dealer then installed a 3 gallon additional resovoir. After the resovoir was added the problem ended, and the additional oil let the system operate much cooler.

I might add, dealer was consulting with IH on this matter at the time.

Did you bleed the air out of the single-acting cylinders before you filled the reservoir full? Since you can't work the air out of the cylinders by actuating them, there should be a bleed screw on the upper end of the clyinders to open and let the air out.

These are IH factory cylinders....and there is no bleed screw.

Hi Paul, many years ago when we had a 300U, the indication of a clogged inlet filter screen was slow lifting and a howling in the hydraulic system. Eventually if it became to clogged the hydraulic would howl all the time and the hydraulic pipes from the pump would get hot.

The 2 pt hitch should lift both rear wheels off the ground very easily.

Good luck

Funny thing is,since I changed the pump it doesnt howl at all.Its like the fluid level is too low,but its not. With all the cobbing the previous 2 owners did,I wouldnt be surprised they are using panty hose as a screen!

Over fill your hyd. reservoir with a gallon of oil. You may need to add more.
