i posed the question about seals for the valve guides. would the smoking be more from rings then valves....it smokes a bit at startup then when warm the smoke increases. it isn't killing the bugs yet but it will get worse i think...any ideas???

Maybe we’re all on the wrong track here. Is the smoke blue, white, or black?

Blue smoke == oil
White smoke == water (not a new Pope in this case) :>)
Black == excessive fuel.

If smokes black, either the carburetor needs adjustment, or the fuel level is too high in the carburetor because the needle and seat valve are bad or the float is set wrong. (Possibly a bad float too).

If the smoke is white, you should be seeing your coolant level dropping in the radiator and you have more serious problems than worn valve guides.

If it smokes blue, doesn’t have any blow by or use more than a couple quarts of oil in 16 hours of working, and doesn’t foul out the spark plugs, I would go have a hot toddy, and quit worrying about it. Those old Farmall’s will not fall apart just because they smoke a little bit and will run a long time, just make sure you keep enough oil in the engine.

Now, if you really want to tear it apart, I’d recommend doing the whole engine, not just the head. Many times doing the head will up the vacuum on intake, and compression enough to increase oil consumption past the older worn rings and cylinder wall.

My 2 cents worth (again).

I have an H that does exactly the same thing. I bought it two years ago from my parents. Its been doing it every since I can remember. I plowed, disc and planted six acres last week. I only added 1/4 quart of oil during that time. (it does have a couple minor leaks) If your worried about something major going wrong thats not necessarily the case. Now that I"ve posted this it will probably fall apart next week:)

i don"t think it smokes from the breather but that has a ton of gunk under it. maybe that is clogged. i"m just torn between doing the head or the rings. can i get by with cleaning the head and doing guides and not the rings? or will a head job do older rings in?

if it doesn't have the power is should check your valves, usually you can reuse the same valves just relap and blue them in. if your h doesn,t use any oil i would just concentrate on the valves, being a gas engine and over 50 years they are sure to be carboned up

Has it ever sat for say a couple years with out running?? If so you may have stuck rings. I have an H that when I got it the engine was stuck from sitting, I fill each cylinder with tranny fluid and let it sit a couple hours and it popped free and now it runs well and doesn't even smoke.

You would think that after 52 years it would have read all the warnings and quit smoking, but I guess it will probably keep doing it until it dies unless you do something radical to it! (I couldn’t resist either) By the way does it ever blow smoke rings? Those are kind of neat…

On a serious note, does your engine have a lot of blow-by especially after it warms up? If so, from what you have posted here now I would say it is definitely due to worn or stuck rings and worn sleeves. If it just smokes a bit at start up and has very little blow-by coming out the breather, then it is more likely to be from valve guides.

Probably not what your pocket book wanted to hear, but…

Well, it"s at least 52 years old and at that age, you can tell it not to, but it won"t listen. Sorry, couldn"t help myself - but then you started it w/the comment about the bugs.
