Do all the 4 cylinders in the B's have a valve tap like mine? valve lash is correct and still have a tap, is this normal for these engines?

When the rocker arms wear in the area where they contact the top of the valve stem, there is a depression worn that makes it impossible to set the valve exactly with a feeler gauge, as the gauge will bridge the depression, and you will wind up with more actual play in the valvetrain than indicated by the feeler gauge.

Have you noticed if your rocker arm tips are worn like I'm describing?

If you have access to a dial indicator, you can go through the valve adjusting sequence, and verify how much actual valve clearance there is with the dial indicator.

I had a BN with a little noise, that i thought was a valve noise....ended up being a wrist pin bushing in the small end of the connecting rod

yeh....many of these old engines have been rebuilt a couple of times with piston/sleeve kits , and the old connecting rods were never re-bushed and honed....the bushings are cheap, but they should be pressed in, and must be honed to fit each piston pin....which leaves your tractor torn down for a couple extra days, ....maybe the old boys did'nt have the time or knew enough to do it

Ed, you're not the only one. My B has a noise in it that I initially thought was a valve tap. After quite a bit of troubleshooting, I now believe that it is a wrist pin. #3 cylinder, I think.

There's a teardown in it's future.

Thanks Ed, I hope it's not a wrist pin, it's definatly in more then one area, I'm half tempted to say it could be exhaust but I'm sticking to the valves

Yeh, I know what you mean...sometimes we must just overlook the small noises....there are alot of harmless noises that can be emmitted from an engine...the tip of the valve where it contacts the rockerarm can be one area, when i worked in a machine shop we used to dress the valve tip for this very reason...i think this is mostly over looked now-a-days...it does tend to "bug" a guy though... also there is cam walk, which can make noise, timing gears too...noise can be transmitted to different parts of the motor....keep in mind that mechanical lifters do tend to make for a noisey valve train
