Since the last post we have magged three more H heads. They were all cracked. Now we are 0 for 8.
Also in trying to find good head for WD9 the shop is 0 for 8 also. That's $480 in mag fees and nothing to show for it. We did sort out the "best of the worst" to save for possoble repair. NOTE:
for those that said they would use a cracked head these are for sale, but I won't hold my breath waiting for calls. I read with interest the advice to go ahead and put the cracked head back on there. But I just can't see rebuilding an engine and then using a bad known part. What would I tell prospective buyer? "It's a total restoration, every part rebuilt, but I had to use some cracked parts" Would sure like to hear from Justin who has the NOS heads.

OK I learned a long time ago that if you ask for advice, TAKE IT! So, 4 of the heads are going to be pressure checked. One is being sent for repair. Two are going to another place for mag check. One will be an anchor for the boat. I will shortly have a new address and business call me "Headman" as I will become the leading authority on Farmall heads :)

Good luck in finding perfect 60 year old cylinder head. I agree that repaired head is not best way to go have seen working tractors run 60 hours week for years with repaired head though.

I'm going to stand up for Gordo here. I happen to personally know the man in the shop that is doing the head checking. If he says it's bad, it's bad. This guy's been looking at heads for about 25 years now, has chemically cold welded them just about as long, so has been around the block a time or two. He doesn't automatically say they are bad just cause they have a crack in them, matter of fact he recommended to me a couple times to put a cracked head back on an engine and that it wouldn’t bother. He was right on both of them. Heads are his specialty, Gordo is in good hands…

Have you ever had any cylinder head work by a company in Iowa called the Midwest Cylinder Head Company?
1-800-873-8506 is their toll free number.
They may be able to repair one of those heads.
I think this is their email address:
nico.ouwerk@reedbusiness.ml

I needed a head for a 2.5L GM engine and I had 3
used ones magnafluxed and all were cracked. Had to buy a new one for $500.00. Had to use the old valves too. Hal

Keep in mind those castings are all around 50 years old, and have been exposed to both heat and cold extremes countless times. There isn't a cylinder head in existance that will not show some cracks somewhere, but that does not mean the head is bad. You need to find a machine shop with a couple of experienced old-timers running it. My guess is that you will find all of those heads are just fine.

How bad are the crackes and where are they? I have an old 650LP that was cracked between intake and exaust on 3 and 4. A machine shop in Harvard IL. stiched them and put in new seats. That is 10 or 12 years ago and is still going. I just play with it pulling or spend a day plowing, but it still holds good water. It used to blow it put the rad just turning it over. There is a place called Chapin cyl head co. in Chapin IL also that has exchange heads for sale. (not sure of spelling) I here thay are real good and will give warranty. Gary

I can believe about the WD-9 heads- they were notorious for cracking. But that many H heads seems a bit odd. Like the others have said- you should really get these heads pressure checked. Not all cracks are really reason to scrap something. I once bought a used racing engine, ran it for two seasons, then took it in to the professional engine builder who had built it in the first place so he could freshen it. He mag'd the crankshaft and showed me where it was cracked. What amazed me was that he said it was cracked the last time he'd worked on the motor too! Said it wasn't hurting anything....although I did buy a new crank(not from him either), the cracked one might have gone a lot longer.

By the way, I was looking for some exhaust valves for a 650 and am still waiting for Justin to email me back about some NOS valves he said he had.

That does not suprise me none , But did you have them pressure checked ??? They can have surface cracks and still be a good useable head We would always fill them with water and cap off the water ports and apply 50 LBS air pressure and also warm the head up it it is a bad head it will look like old faithful . It is almost like taken a John Deere crank in for regrinding when the mag then they also show cracks some are only a couple tousandth deep and others go way down but most shops will not even try and grind the crank .

I cant find my Atlas price list but I think $480 dollars would bring you close to owning your own Magnaflux crack detection equipment.Search Goodson or Atlas for a catalog. For $50 you can get non-magnetic magnaflux kit for cracks and leaks.

Gordon,

How well do you trust this guy who is doing the magnafluxing? Eight for eight seems a bit strange to me.

Dunno,

Allan
