Repairing hole in tin in lightbar toolbox?

Well, I went crazy and bought a lightbar toolbox on ebay for $50. It's not in very good shape but it looks like I should be able to just cut out the bottom and replace it. Other than the bottom there are no holes in it and all the brackets and everything are in good shape. Here is a pic of the bottom:

Well, I bought it on ebay and for some reason the guy sent an extra toolbox with it! On the outside of the box he just wrote "Bonus! You get 2!". The "Bonus" toolbox is in better shape overall but has 2 dime sized hoes that have rusted out in the front of the toolbox. I'm not looking for the perfect restoration so I was wondering how I would go about repairing the holes and just using that one? What should I do with the extra toolbox?

Any advice?

Thanks in advance. Nathan

Buy another tractor that will fit the box

Perfect repros used to be available from Mark Mathis in Cairo, MO. They are indistinguishable from the real one. They even have a pressed area for the decal on the lid. You probably haven't even noticed that on your original. I bought mine for around $100. I bet they are still available. BTW, I have both an old and a repro; neither are for sale.

I can't tell for sure by looking, and I am not that familiar with the box you have, but it looks like the bottom may be spot welded in. If so, you might be able to drill out the spot welds, remove the bottom, cut out a new bottom and weld in, clean it up good and paint, and you will be good to go. I would also try to repair the other one, and resell on ebay to recover your expenses, and perhaps some extra for your troubles. I had an old tool box off a Ferguson which someone had bolted on an old hay baler I had which had been junked, and for grins I cleaned it up and primed it and it brought $50 on ebay. That probably did not give me much of an hourly wage for removing it, cleaning it up and painting it, but I figured I got a little pocket money, and helped someone who needed it out. I really didn't think it would bring that much so I was happy with the outcome.

I have one that I was not that bad. I was able to sand blast and spray trunk paint in the inside to fill the pin holes. It turned out nice.

I've seen nice boxes bring over $200 so you have a little room to work. I'd put one of them back on ebay as-is. fix the other one for yourself. Or if you are a good tin man you may be able to fix both and sell one but don't know how selling a repaired box would work.

If he does a good job on it, it'll bring a fortune.

I would put a new bottom in that tool box instead of patching it. You may be able to sell the other
box to the Mig Welder to pay for the new bottom, just kidding. Hal

Ever watch those hot rod car shows on TV? They're always doing how-tos on repairing holes in sheet metal.

Basically, you have to cut out the rusty area and replace with a patch of new metal. If you want it to look nice, you would make the patch fit IN the hole, not over it. Then you take a mig welder and stitch it in. Finally, you grind it down smooth. The end result is that you can't tell it was repaired.

For the other box? Send it to me as payment for this advice :) Just kidding, but seriously if you want to get rid of it for a reasonable price, I'd be willing.
