In case some of you missed this yesterday I posted with an H block that had the serial # stamped in a block on the rear above the oil filter. Every other H I have seen has it in the front above the Mag. What makes this one so special . Year? Or What. Thanks again MagMan

OK, after looking at the pic, I just had to go out and take a look at mine. The 1950 has the serial number in the same location as your 51. The next newest H I have is a 46, and it has the number up to the front.

Casting codes won't always exactly match, usually the letter for the year will be the same throughout the tractor but if the tractor was built very early in the year it could very easily have components with last years date on them. I would say that T and W would not be too unusual.

I have a 52 H engine block-Serial #383405, casting code 4-9-X (1952), part # 6695-DF, and the serial # is stamped above and just a little in front of the oil filter. Looks the same as yours. ken

FBHM is standard prefix for H engine and apears
to be original. To help little more what is # and suffix letters below # 4 spark plug?

Magman is the pad with stamped # below and little
to rear of # 3 spark plug or above and just ahead
of oil filter.Thats where newer blocks had serial
#.

Does the spot where it's stamped look like the spot over the mag where the others are stamped? That is, like it was flattened and milled smooth first as opposed to just being stamped into the rough cast surface?

Magman, you do have me curious, is there anything else different on this engine? How about the casting codes? A friend of mine was working on an M and we discovered that the casting code on the engine block did not match up with any codes that would have been correct for an M. In fact, the codes put the date of casting somewhere around 1959 if I remember correctly, and it was an M block. Not super, not 400, not 450.

Hey man, don't take a lack of useful responses personally. It's not that you've been shunned by the community, or that your question is too stupid... It's because nobody knows why, that's all. Only somebody with intimate knowledge of the history of manufacturing processes at IH in the 1940s would know, or know where to find such information. There aren't too many of them around anymore.

Jon, I think mine is stamped above the oil filter too - but I'll check for sure.

Making progress on the rebuild?
