Folks. My 44 H starts so easily now it isn't even funny. Now imagine this. I live in Manassas, Virginia in suburbia single family detached homes on .25 acre lots. I fired up the tractor hollared for the wife to come out and get on the back and we made the first voyage on the tractor up and back about 4-6 street blocks. The goal was to deliver a case of beer in the front end loader to a neighbor 3 blocks up from our house. This goal was successfull. The wife decided to stay and talk to the neighbors, so I drove it back to the house. However, here is the reason for my post.

After I started the tractor I noticed a metalic clanking sound in the rear end of the tractor. This was after I pulled it up onto our driveway. It was out of gear with the brakes locked on. I was letting it warm up until we were ready to go drive it. I crawled around the rear of the tractor, and the sound seemed to be coming just in front of the brake band area, but on the inside of tractor. I am not sure if I could hear the sound while I was driving the tractor, but I don't think I could hear anything over the roar of the motor anyway. What do you guys think it might be? The sound also sounds like the rain cap on the muffler when the cap raises up and hits the muffler, sorda like that.

I don't think it is a terminal issue since the tractor still drove great. I also have no way of just taking the rear end apart to find the problem. So what do you think I should start looking for based on my analysis? Thanks.

Ok I checked for the sound with the clutch engaged. There was no ticking or clacking noise with it engaged. The PTO and the belt pulley was disengaged fully also. I checked the fluid level for the trany with the little plug on the left side, and sludgey oil came out, but no water, so I guess that is a good thing. Do you think I should just change out the oil and see if that makes the difference, or should I check out the rest of the possibilities first?

Tanner - See if the sound goes away when the clutch depressed and the tractor is stationary.

If the sound disappears, remove the tin dust cover under the tractor between the belly pump and the transmission. Then look for loose bolts or worn out rubber bushings at in the transmission input flex coupling. Also check for radial slop in the input shaft (indicating a worn bearing). Note: You'll need to remove the belly pump drive shaft to access the coupling - slide the end collars toward the center pf the shaft and the shaft will drop out of the drive dogs.

If everything at the input shaft looks good try running the tractor with the belly pump drive shaft removed. Sometimes a worn drive shaft or tired pump will make odd ticking and clunking sounds when they are spinning....

Any chance that the PTO might not be totally disengaged and is cauing the noise?

Hi Tanner, Do you still hear it with the clutch ingauged? Check your oil level in the tranny the little plug in the LH side in front of the brake band on the side of the tranny. If its low noises tend to disapearb when the get lubed better specially after sutting . Also there is a piolit bearing in the front that tends to go a lot to I have replaced a few my self its it holds the tranny gear shaft into the front housing if I remember right. They are a roller bearing usally costs about $25.00 for the part I am thinking 5208 for some reason FM I dont know .You would have to pull the top cover off to get to it. HAVE A GOOD BEER RUN JON

It may also be the differential carrier or pig. The bearing holders will break off and ride on the brake pinion shaft causing a metalic grinding sound, and it will kinda act like it locks up for a split second till it breaks loose. seen alot of H's broke like this,,,, Chad

So that's what you call that piece. It was broken off in my H when I got it. Had to by a half of the differential case from a salvage yard. Never did know what to tell people what was wrong.
