Has anyone else put in for a free IH/Navistar gas cap lately? Its been months since I mailed in for mine, and havent seen it yet.I wonder if they underestimated the demand, and the number of surviving IH/Farmall tractors out there.

It took about six weeks for mine to come in. It is now painted IHC50 red and sits proudly on top of my gas tank.

Paul: I actually got my first free gas cap sometime in the late 1960s or early 70s. This all came about as the result of an accident, in which the old type cap got the blame in subsiquent legal action. These caps are not on inventory, thus they wait until sufficient orders are in for a production run. The reason your cap comes from Navistar is Case refused to take on that liability in the buyout.

Initially the program only ever applied to letter and super letter series tractors. Most of the 100, 200, 300, 400 line came new with the new type cap. There may be some exceptions. My 300 and 130 both came new with the new type cap. However I have seen 40-60 series tractors with old type cap, not new tractors mind you. I know if you send in form with a 140 on it today, you will get a new cap. I sent the form in about 4 years ago for caps that had already been replaced once, and they came in about 6 weeks. After that my son bought a couple tractors including a parts tractor with a valid tag. He received new caps about 4 months later. I am quite surprised the program still exists. I suppose as long as one of these old tractors are running Navistar is liable. Those caps are probably quite cheap insurance for them.

All diesels up to and including 66 series use the same cap.

Is it Snipe Season again? Do I need a Case-IH Snipe Hunting License? With a Farmall Stamp?

You have a better chance of bagging a snipe than you do of getting one of those "free" gas caps.

I know everyone is going to yell at me for wasting money, but last fall after buying my 140, I drove to the IH dealer in the next county and bought a new muffler and a new multi-baffled gas cap. I knew about the free gas cap program, but figured with my hilly terrain and tendency to put as much gas in the tank as possible (to limit condensation), it was not worth the risk to bumping around with a rusty near-fifty year old single baffle drooling gas cap. Growing up, I knew of a boy that got blown off an offset Farmall (just got singed hair and some flash burns) during refueling. I can't remember what the new cap cost, but I don't recall it being much more than $10 or $15. Burns are expensive and if you are 200 pounds like me, getting off a 140 in a hurry is a much slower proposition at age 52 than it was at age 15.

It makes sense....the more they send out in bulk the cheaper the shipper per unit.Sorta like JC Whitney in the old days. They would charge $18 for shipping yet they would hold your order for weeks until they had hundreds and then bulk mail them.Usually the date on the package would reflect only a few days earlier it was shipped.BTW:They dont seem to do that anymore...they actually ship in a normal manner these days.
As these caps are FREE to us,THEY wouldnt want to spend anymore than they have to.Heck, the caps are probably from Taiwan or China.

Geeez, the tractor is 50 years old, you may be even older, they have been sending new gas caps for years -anticipation is the key to pleasure! If you can't wait - go buy one. My nickel Dick Davis
