I needed help replacing the rear tire on my M. I asked my 19yr step daughter for help. at the time she was on her back side on the sofa watching the tube. she said no way, she would get dirty. I called my 27yr son-in-law and asked him for help; he said no, he was playing a vido game so i asked his wife, my 24yr other step daughter. She said sure. we worked till dark trying to get the tire of the rim.

Now you have to understand, that my 24yr daughter if wet might weight 100lbs and is real short and thin. The tire and rim are bigger then her, yet she was right there helping.

Its just a shame to see a grown man playing vido games and a teenager who thinks its beneith here to get her hands dirty..... what has our youth become?

I'm a teenager and own 7 of my own tractors and I do most of the work on them myself. If I don't knowing something I go get help but I'm right there learning what to due. I agree if the younger generations don't get off of their lazy asses all of this old equipment will be lost forever.

I've been in a similiar situation before. Tell them when it comes time to eat the tire and rim that you won't want any help. That's show them! It worked for me.

hey guys...I see where your comin from but there are still a few good farm kids around. I'm 16 and I help out on the farm. I can combine and drill beans or disk or whatever. I actually enjoy it. When I'm not farming I pull tractors and try to help work on it as much as I can. I plan to go to college and become a chemical rep. I agree that kids need to know more about farming because we would all be in bad shape with out it.

I hear what everybody is saying and I not sure what to say. I started working with my dad on the farm when I was 5 or 6 yrs old and now I work 51 hrs a week off the farm, help a friend with his bussiness, still farm with my father, and help raise my son and daughter

I know how that is. I'm 20 years old, work 50-60 hours/week, plus tring to start a farm from scratch, and do a little masonry work on the side. Seems like I am the only young person that takes even a bit of pride in my work. Too bad your step-daughter is married... Later, Rich

Do they live on a farm? I realize how good it is to live on a farm. I do and am attending college to be a farmer. Farming makes a hard worker out of everyone.

Leroy, sounds like your 24 year old step daughter would make a good business partner. Maybe you and her should put together a business or go in together to grow your farming business. Smart hard-working partners are hard to find and it sure sounds like she has the right attitude teaming-up with in business. Besides, make it a woman owned business and it will reap Title/
Section 8 benefits for business with the federal government, local governments or with businesses needing to show they've given contracts to Section 8 Minority or Woman-owned businesses. I knew of a large manufacturing company here in NC that gave out yard keeping work to a minority firm to the tune of $250,000 a year so as to make their minority set-aside contracts percentage reported to the Federal government.

Does the 19 year old live @ home? If so why did she have the choice? I'm 30 and even though I'm "grown" I STILL feel obligated to help my father if he asks for help.

I'm 24 and moved back with dad, helping put my sister through college(dean's list every semester working and going to school both full-time, my mom left with the money they had saved) and driving truck part-time enough to get my bills paid and get home to help since he can only afford to have so many people on payroll. sometimes we cheat I buy fuel with the credit card and dad pays my bills when things get too hectic. ( I know I must be crazy) After 20 years of my dad and I not getting along because of mom lying to us all the time I feel like I should try to make up for it. Also I think that child labor laws and anti-child-abuse zealots are two of the worst things for kids. Not having any of my own and hating when it happened I can still see where a good kick in the butt when I needed it did me some good.

My 25 year old brother in law ( who actually ran the farm when he was 16 and 17 cause the father in law was laid up) moved to town and now has a city girl and a stupid play station, will will not help with anything here unless he can have his hindend in the seat of a tractor. My 72 year old father will come over every day and do anything cause he said if he dont stay busy he will get old. My 2 brothers did not even show their faces round here untill all the major barn cleaning was done. My 5 and 8 year old were far more helpful than most of my adult relatives. Some times the worms really get the apple even if it falls close to the tree.

Our son had no intrest in the farm. Didnt even want to drive a tractor. From the time he turned 16 and to this present day he has been away from home more then he has been home. Exchange student, college, working and whatever.

Figure he owes us about $500,000 with intrest.
Almost enuf to retire on.
