We have an IH 46 baler we bought new. It has sat in the shed for years. We used it quite a bit in the 60's and 70's, but were never very impressed with the consistancy of the knotters. It seemed we always had to be tinkering with them. We may do a little baling this summer. Anyone have much experience with this model? Any tips? Thanks, Glenn F.

Glenn, I have two 46 balers I picked up a year or two ago. One is for parts and the other needs just a bit of work. I am in central Iowa if you're interested. I ran out of patience working on mine, got a 14T and it hasn't given me much trouble at all.

Glen I had two 46's for a lot of years. custom baled several thousand bales a year, I would only use sisal twine that came from Brazil, It was always a constant size, never bunched up in the tension plates were it leaves the twine compartment. Some Farmers wanted plastic twine but I could never get it to work well in either baler. The 46 will tie well even when they are really wore if you get the tension set right leaving the compartment and the tension on the fingers that hold the knot untill it is pulled off and keep the knives sharp. Also there is a 5/16 square key in the shaft that drives the knotter system, some times these keys wear and it gets the knotters out of time. this will give you fits.I stillshould have a manual, I will check and if I do I will post for you

Hi, we had a 45 then a 46 for many years. Like previous post said buy the best twine, replace twine knives, make sure twine disks are set correctly by adding or subtracting shims and don't run PTO to fast, around 500 RPM. If the twine disks are to tight it will cut the twine, if they are to loose the twine will slip out and not tie. The other thing that was wrong with our knotters was the bill hook tension arm guide was a U and the insides of the U were rough and the tension arm would stick every so often and miss a tie. This was fixed by polishing the inside of the U on the knotter casting. It would bale faster and pickup cleaner than neighbors JD 14T but neighbor never had to do maintance on the knotter.

My 2 cents

Wehad a 45 when I was a kid, and neighbor had a 46. Both are nearly identical in the knoters. As I remember, they were touchy on getting things set right. Twine knoves set and sharp, and bill hooks that hold twine adjusted right. Also, we found that you wanted to buy the best twine you could find. It would not tie with cheap twine. Don't know how it will handle the new plastic twine. get a manual and follow the procedures in it and it should tie good. Somnetimes the 45 seemed to have mind of its own, but most of the time it did ok.
