I recently posted about my farmall M that runs and dies. Before it would run and die, but now I can't even get it to run. It won't start. I thought it was the solenoid so I replaced that, but now all it does when I hit the ignition is click once until I turn the key off. I've tested it and I have 12 volts going into the solenoid, and 12 coming out at the post on the starter when I turn the key. However, the starter just won't engage. I don't know if the starter is bad or what. I'd appreciate anyones input. Thanks

If it's set outside , the starter could be dirty rusty inside . Take it off and if it won't turn with a jumper cable going to it ,tear it down and use sandpaper on the rotor and the inside of the fields on the stater( outside housing of starter) and put back togeather. Had to do it to my H, and VAC.

I had the problem of the tractor cutting off after it ran a while. I found the when we painted the tractor we painted the gas tank vent shut. Opened the vent with a nail and had no more problem

If you loosen the starter bolts as NDS has suggested and the bendix isn't stuck. Double check all your battery and clean all battery connections. Are you sure the battery is fully charged? If the battery charge is ok and still
won't crank. Disconnect the battery ground and pull the starter off the tractor and reconnect
the battery ground. Short across the solenoid
with a screwdriver to see the bendix is energized.
Just touch it for a moment to see if the bendix
flies forward. Keep hands, fingers and clothing away from the pinion gear while doing this. If this checks out ok see if the engine can be turned with a crank or bar.

If there's a ballast resistor in the ignition
circuit I would replace it. If the tractor starts while cranking, then dies, is good indication of a defective resistor. Good Luck, Hal

First thing I would try is to loosen starter bolts and shake starter. Letter series tractors are bad to hang bendix up on flywheel gear. Just had to break one loose a few minutes ago have had to do this untold times on many different tractors.

If you don't have the money to fix the starter right now, you could always pull start it in 5th gear.

My 2 cents

do you have the little wires crossed at the solenoid ???

if this is 12 volt- and it has a resistor--replace it.

make sure you have a good solid ground

Starter is probably bad or the bendex is hung up on the flywheel
