I drug this 1945 M out of the trees this weekend and found this date code on the axle housing. The tranny housing has a 'P' code, but everything forward of the tranny has 'O' as the date, which matches the S/N year.

Any ideas on this one???

Not uncommon for axle housings to break especialy if tractor once had mounted cotton or corn picker. I have 1940 M that has K axle on one side but tractor was under low drum cotton picker at one time. Remenber helping Dad change axle housing on 400 cotton picker tractor in middle of field once.

O is for 1945, P is for 1946. Does the serial number indicate the tractor is an early 1946? Or a late 1945? Casting codes do not always match. Also, like Bob M said, the axle housings may have been replaced.

John - Your tractor may have suffered a broken axle at some point in it's working life and it was replaced with a the newer one from a boneyard.

My father in law has a '53 SM ("Y" code) that rolled and broke an axle. The replacement shows a "B" date code indicating it's from a '56 400 (or 450??)

If this were from a 400 or such, what would the year be? 1959? Wouldn't it have extra holes for a fast hitch or the like, or something else I could look for?

Would the axle diameter be the same as the standard M?

John: Fast hitch bolts only to rear end casting. On axle size at least where the wheel goes, same size on first M in 1939 as the last 686 in 1979. I imagine there were some internal differences over the years.

Hugh: The last 686's were manufactured in 1980 with serial numbers in the 13000 range.
