Another Torque Amp Question

Just picked up a excellent 350 on auction on Sat that was represented as having a new TA put in a few years ago. During the auction I actually moved the tractor back and forth in both positions.

I did not drive the tractor on the trailer but when I got it home I took it for a spin around the block and lo and behold low range is out.

Question is Can TA be misadjusted so low range is out and conversly can A TA be made operable just by readjusting the linkage and what is the procedure.

I dont want to raise cain with the auctioneer until I know for sure this is a real problem.

Like a couple of others have said check and see what ya got for Trans fluid , If it is not Hy Tran or it's eq. THen drain it and flush the rear end and trans with 10 gal of diesel fuel by running it up and down the road for a while an drain it and refill with what is suppose to be in there . Also get your self a I T manual and check and make sure that ALL THE ADJUSTMENTS are correct. THEN GO AND HAVE A SESSION with the auctioneer if he called it to be good then i would press the issue . I have bought alot of I H tractors and if they call it to be a good T/A then it best be . Bought one off and auctioneer in Ind and the called it on the ride and drive and i bought it for 500 more then i had planed on spending only to get it home to find that it was out called him and he asked if i wanted to bring it back to get it fixed or what i told him that sincce i was in the business to fix tractor that i would do it myself he sent me a check or the job and it was for more then i usualy charge i sent him back the differance.

Doc, Doc,

This was an auction; he didn't buy a new tractor with a warranty.

The auctioneer said that it had a new T/A put in within the past few years. He didn't say it was any good.

Just another case of somebody doin' it wrong, that's all.

Well Allen 90% of the sales that i use to go to had a ride and drive on the rollen stock and if the told ya it was Ride and Drive that is what they ment that the engine trans and rear end was good to go but batterys , lites and hdy. seats, and oil leaks were your problem Now if they told you that it was AS IS then you knew what you were getting or it was in the dead row , loved the dead row if i needed work i would go shoppen in the dead row and bring and old girl back to life , A whole bunch of 706 gasser were brought back into the world out of there most times if was a pluged fuel line dead battery and charging system and a bad T/A ok no big deal . New T/A rebuild the charging system fix a couple lite new seat tune up fresh gas couple of new gskts and a good pint job out to the field for some testing get some dust on her and load her up and off she went some time they sold while i was out worken them .

If it slips in low range, the ramp and rollers are shot, simple as that.

Thanks guys, I think I will get the unit toasty warm tomorrow and see what happens. I like the tractor but it is definitly devalued without a working TA. Should be a interesting week.

Its not devalued without the TA, 90% of all TA's are out or on the way out. You don't need it.

Van, I disagree with you. donwis values the tractor with a working TA and applied that value to what he was willing to pay. Most agree that the price to repair a TA is sizeable when compared to the overall cost of a vintage tractor. To some of us it isn't worth the cost to repair it. But your statement that "he doesn't need it" some how trys to convey that your judgement is superior to his, it isn't, in my opinion.

I think donwis would like to hold the auctioneer to what he implied was fact. I know, I know, auctioneers are like lawyers and can't be pinned down - but I know several honorable men who happen to be in the business and they do not want to be wrong. My nickel Dick Davis

I guess it would depend on why you want the tractor. I'd hate to think of trying to work mine without it. It ABSOLUTELY devalues the tractor. It devalues it by the amount it would cost to make it right. I am getting a little tired of that attitude. Too many guys using it as an excuse for fraud.

Dave H, Fraud you say? I don"t think so. If one of mine was for sale and the TA was out I would tell you, and if you had any sence you would know anyway when you drove it. Dick, I have two with TA, one works ond don"t, except for heavy tillage TA ain"t needed, just another toy to break while playing around with.

I'm thinking that lubricant choice makes a difference how a TA works. The thicker the oil,the colder the temperature, the more likely the TA is to hang up and slip. The thinner, the warmer, the less likely. If they are selling off a machine, maybe they put thick oil in the trans to keep it from leaking (??).Just a guess.
I think thats my problem. The old motor oil/gear lube they have in my 300U has mostly gummed up,and add cold weather and things dont flow very well.I'm dreading putting in Hy Tran...for fear of all the leaks I'm going to see probably.

You TA can be adjusted but most likely it is shot in low range. Does it pull at all in low or does not not move in low ?? My experience with TA is if you don't have to fix them the are not worth fixing. Unless you need the ability to slow down or speed up a little it is a huge cost to repair and not worth the cost to me . Been running a fleet of 1486 with the TA out of them because one side is gone, I can buy them cheep and run then in which ever range is working ok. Of course you bought it at auction and it was probally sold as is where is !! So there is probally no reason to yell at the auctioneer, he just told what he had been told ... could have had a new one put in last week and it not worth a dang when you bought it. Good luck
