I am a Ford/Oliver guy looking at a 656 diesel. It runs ok, a bit hard to start, but fine once warm. The tranny is stuck in low. Tin is excellent, tires are good, power steering works, no noise in the gears I could use. What should I be worried about and what is a fair price?

Thanks, Tip

I have used a 656 Utility belonging to my neighbor on several occasions. I really like the tractor once it is running, seems to have power and is fairly economical on fuel. He used either to start until I fixed glow plugs on it. You have to use the glow plugs regardless of weather and regardless of how warm the tractor is. If you are indicating the TA lever is stuck in low, his was the same way due to non use and sitting in weather. The shaft going through the daash housing was frozen up. I ended up breaking it trying to free it up and had to partially drill it out to replace it.

Tip, Tractors vary in price according to condition and to some extent geograpics. I attended an auction today, and a 656 Diesel went r=for $5,800. It has WFE, 3 point hitch, and was in excellent shape. NOt show quality as it was a working tractor with some scratches, but no dings, and a good TA. If the TA is out, you can discount $1,000 as that is what it will cost to repare it. The bottom line question becomes, what is it worth to you?

Hi Tip,

How many hours on the tractor?

Do you mean that the tractor is actually stuck in low gear or do you mean that the T/A is only working on the low side?

Allan
