Anybody a diesel mechanic?

Folks, working on a MM 705 diesel. Heads reconditioned, new rings, injectors rebuilt, fresh fuel and filters. Runs less than good, wet stacking on # 4 and 5. I seem to be able to have an affect with timing on the pump but I can't get to clean up. Suggestions on what I'm missing?
Thanks,
Curt

you could just crack the line at the inj pump on each cylinder and see if there is a change or a miss in that cylinder. if no change in sound the injector or line is plugged.

I hope you guys have got your notifier on since this post has fallen so far down on the list. I ran the big guy last night for a while. I checked valve adjustment, pump timing, etc. Everything checks out. I found that if I add the slightest ether stream, and I mean slightest, he smooths right out, and stays smooth after I stop the ether for a bit and then falls back into that less than perfect running. Acceleration also smoothes it out. What do you think?

sounds like the pump timing is off a 1/2 a degree ( advanced to far)...make sure the static timing is T.D.C.... Pump timing is at the right degree or you may have to fudge it a little because the degree lines may change after being rebuilt.--- or there is an idle screw on the pump and adjust that with the throttle linkage OFF and get it to smooth out and adjust the linkage to fit the rpm.

Check your camshaft (valve lift).

Run it, warm it up, work it some, to break in the engine. If the problem continues, do a compression test, if that's OK, swap the injectors between the offending cylinders , and a couple that are firing better, and see if the problem moves with them, or stays with the same cylinders..
