I bought this 1950 W4 last year which hadn"t run for about 10 years. Had to re-build the carb, magneto and flush the gas tank first, but it finally started (by pulling)and ran pretty good (no smoke- great oil pressure). My problem is this: it doesn"t want to start on it"s own with the starter- but pull it about 10 feet and it"s running. I replaced the condenser and points in the mag.. new plugs etc... could the problem be in the valves themselves? Should I have the head redone or is there something that i"m missing along the way? Thanks for any help!
Jeff

Jeff: I really don't have any experience with mags, however I think your problem has to be spark. Your symtoms are very much IH. Over the years I've seen lots of these would crank good yet would not fire up. Tow them 10' and they are going. This is understandable with distributor ign as starter can draw enough juice to cause poor spark, if conditions are right.

I think the others have the solution for you, it's got to be that mag.

More likely than not, the issue is either weak spark, or the timing is slightly off.

I don't follow you--most people pull start because the battery is dead. If it doesn't turn over with the starter, make sure the battery is fully charged and that all the connections are clean. In other words take each connection off from the starter, battery, and starter switch and clean them. Use large battery cables, minimum 2 gauge. If it doesn't turn over then you probably have starter problems. It should also start fairly easily with the hand crank if you have one. You can determine if you have valve problems or ring problems by running a wet and dry compression test. Even if it doesn't smoke out the exhaust, significant smoke from the draft tube (by the oil filter on the right side of engine) is an indication the engine is getting worn. It may not smoke much from there until the engine is hot. Might be a good idea to adjust the valve lash also. The engine has to be in pretty sad shape not to start.

CNKS, I thought he was saying that the motor cranks with the starter, but won't fire. I'm guessing it needs the speed of the pull start to get the motor going. Maybe that could be an impulse coupling issue with the mag. Is there good spark at cranking speeds?
Paul

Could be, didn't think about that -- The only mag I have is on an H that I haven't started my "restoration" on yet. Use a 12 volt battery only to start, generator, etc is disconnected, turns over very fast, perhaps I'm too used to that.

Does it have a mag? If so, is the impulse clicking?

My OS6 did the same thing. I went thru the timing drill again and got the impluse hitting right on time. Scared me it started so fast It was like the engine couldn't wait to start
