Ok, We had to put a new manifold on the H today, got it all put back together and wanted to start it up. So we got it started and were going to take it out for a spin, let out the clutch and she bogged down in neutral like it was starting off in 5th gear. Now, it cant be the brakes, cause its got poor brakes and would move with them on. So either it is stuck in a gear, or there is water in the back end and everything is frozen and wont move. This is how all our tractors have been shedded. They were restored by my grandpa about 1987, always stored in the shed till 2003, hadn't bin run for 7 years at that time, we took them to our place and they sat out for a month{I KNOW WE WERE DUM TO} got rained on a couple times, now our in our 80+ year old barn out of the rain. In both sheds they sweated. So could this wet lifestyle have gotten to the rear end oil, made it milky and freeze a gear up? We plan on changing all rear end oil in the spring. And it dont move at all, judt bogs. Thanks

One thing at a time. First you say that it bogs down in neutral. Take the shifter out and make sure that the transmission is definitely in neutral. It is very likely that you are stuck in a gear, and that there is ice in the final drives preventing the gears from turning. If it truly is bogging down in neutral, does it have a belly pump? If so it could be ice in the belly pump that could be responsible for your symptoms as it turns any time the clutch is engaged.

Changing the oil will eliminate the problem, but when the weather warms up, if you let the tractor set for a few days, the water will settle out of the oil and you can drain it by loosening the drain plugs until they are almost ready to fall out. The water will drain out first then you will see the fluid color darken and slow down when the transmission grease starts to come out. Then tighten the plug back up. Doing this in the fall will prevent ice in the rear end.

Don't panic! Its ice in the transmission. Get it warmed up and change the oil. In this terrible Ontario weather you have to do that every few years. No damage will be done.

Farmall kid,

I had same kind of problems with a 444 few years back. Needed to run it for a job and couldn't budge it. So, I threw a tarp over it and fired up my torpedo heater to thaw out the final drive. Thawed out within 30 minutes.

I would caution you though as obviously there is a fire hazard here!!!!

Good luck,

Buzz

pull the drain plug and see what you have. get a nipco heater and heat the rearend . if it goes it was frozen.
sometimes the bottom end of the gearshift gets worn out and it will stay in that gear until you take the shifter out and weld some back on.

most likely ice. I think it would be thawed here. the frost is out of the ground in sunny spots and I fixed fence this afternoon in my shirt sleeves. Hope you have better luck with your H than I'm havin' with my "money bucket"

If you can jack up both rear wheels you can turn one and see if it is free to determine whether you are frozen.

If not, take the gearshift lever out and straighten up the gears. Did you try to put it in neutral and let the clutch out? If it is stuck in two gears you can sometimes go back to neutral and just be stuck in one gear.
