The service manual says use wrench 11858D to tighten the packing nut. I do not want to damage the nut by usisng vice grips. Any ideas as to where I can find the wrench?

The nut on the H is 7/8, I assume the M is the same--a stubby combination wrench, using the open end will work, enough to tighten anyway, a little clutzy but works.

If you're any good with a welder, you can make one with a large flat washer and a flat piece of metal. I made one and it will probably outlast me.

Now this is an idea! No wonder we are the country that has gone to the moon and back! Thanks. Hope that you outlast it.

Look on eBay. I see these wrenches come up from time to time. I think I got a couple of them from there. It is just a stamped steel spanner-type wrench. The type was also used on the F-20 for the tranny input and PTO output shaft seals. I found a set of Williams spanners on eBay which I use on the tractors.

1958 or thereabouts, meaning the special wrench is almost certainly no longer available.

Sorry, spanner wrenches are available, even if you don't find the IH original.

I just use a hammer and brass rod and tap it tight.
