350 gas ran fine, parked it for awhile, went to start it. Turned over fine,6v, would not start. Hit it with ether still wouldn't start or even pop. Then while turning over heard clunk and it locked up. Removed starter, tried bar in flywheel and fanbelt pulling, will not turn either way. Any thoughts re problem/solution appreciated.

cowman if you do decide to pull the pan and can see nothing wrong get a long screw driver and pry the crankshaft back and forth.if the complete crankshaft moves the bearings are ok and the crank is not broken.. then go to the rod bearingsto make sure they are loose and able to move.if all bearings are free you dont have a lower end lock up.how long had it been setting before you tried to start it?going back to it not starting.it should have tried to fire with ether unless there is something wrong in the ignition system.thats what led me to believe its someyhing in the timing gearsor distributor drive area.sure hope it is something simple and doesnt involve what could be major repairs.

You may have a piston seized for some unknown reason. We had a light so we could look into the cylinders. It was called a borescope light and was used for inspecting the bore of a gun. A broken connecting rod is possible too. You may have to loosen the bearing caps if you do not see anything when you pull the pan to see if this frees up the engine. You can retorque them if this isn't the problem. Hal

I think brtx had the first step when he suggested pulling the pan. That clunk you heard could be anything but it sure reminded me of a crankshaft that went. At least with the pan off you can start to isolate the problem.

About noise and problem i could'nt say,but if the T/A holds some it could be keeping you from
turning engine backwards.Move the T/A handle and try it.

dont think it would be a valve or anything on top of a piston.if it was you would be able to roll the engine back till you came to the top of the stroke again.i suspect it may be something in the timing gears or in the drive to the distributor.maybe some of the other guys would have an idea.most of my experience is on truck diesel.i would start by pulling the oil pan and valve cover then go from there.just my guess.let us know when you find the problem

your guess is as good as mine. How much ether did you use? I would not think you could use enought ether in a gas engine to hurt anything and I have run engines on straight ether. Sounds like something broke but what or why? could be something simple like a broken valve and maybe that is why it was hard to start.
