I am looking for some ways to get more power out of my 46 H. Any ideas? Mill the head? Bigger pistons? Thanks for any help.

PhillipW, Tear the engine down, pull out the sleeves, insert a 350 piston kit (3-5/8 bore) Sleeve and piston kits are around 350-400 bucks if you find the right place. And thats for everything,, Run the 350 head gasket. Depends really, on what casting you cyl head is,, for a couple hundred bucks you can swap the old H head out for a 350 head, while you are at it, you can also install a Super H-350 camshaft. Most 350 piston kits are firecrater pistons, which are a good piston design for making torque. Thats what you can do to the block and head,,, now on carbs, distributors and governors. If you replaced the manifold, and used a Super H-450 carb, you will pick up a few free HP, rejet the carb, and metering stem, run a better grade gas in it, the HP increases more. Tear apart the distributor, if you know what to do,,, Underneath the points plate, there is a mechanical advance mechanism. it consists of a set of weights, 2 small springs, and the rotor shaft. 9 out of 10 Farmall tractors that come in to our repair shop, the advance is stuck, broken, or so sloopy from being worn out, it suprizes me that they ran! You can replace the springs with the stock springs, or ones from a Chevrolet HEI distributor used in the small, or big block chevys. The lighter springs will give you some pep in your throttle responce. If its is a running tractor,, has good compression across the cyls, there may be room for a few more hidden ponies there,, not much,,, but, it would be enough to notice while operating it. Best advice at the moment, is to look at your spark plugs,, if they are very light in color, you need more fuel,, or a bigger carb. Feel free to email me on how to rejet the carbs, rebuild the advance unit, governors, and any other IH hop up questions that work!! Hope some of this helps! or you can call, 574-893-1032 for technical information and perfomance parts. also, 574-893-7437 for the shop. Hope this helps, ChadS

Go to the puller board a look for ChadS. He is the guru of hopping up H's. Larger pistions and sleeves, mill the head, port match the intake and exhaust, and some carb work will make that H run pretty good! Gook luck

Trade it in on an M. You can put H decals on your new M if it makes you feel better.

A Pertronnix electronic ignition kit and a high voltage coil will give you more power.

Might try what I'm doing with mine, I'm putting a Chev 2.8 liter V6 in mine. I am mounting a chev 4 speed transmission in the torque tube that will be locked in second gear.the V6 at 3800 will match the H at 1650rpm. ground speed will be almost the same. My H mowes and rakes hay and runs augers .

New rings and a valve job are a good start. Beyond that, higher compression pistons (pop-up, fire crater, etc)and 3 7/16" sleeves, use a gas head (if you don't already have one), regrind the cam for higher lift (0.240" vs 0.202"). Search the archives for 'tune up M' posted by CNKS to get more out of the carb and distributor.

Depends on how much you want to spend. original IH fire crater pistons and sleeves could be upwards of $600.00 or more. Aftermarket pistons are a good alternative. Can get you a complete in frame kit for $435.00 shipped to you, these are fire crater style pistons. This has sleeves and pistons, rings, pins, reatiners, rod and main bearings, with thrusts, head and oil pan gasket set.

You can get parts at this website, your local IH dealer, Value built (sp?), places like Steel Wheel Ranch, Carter Grunwald (sp?). Several pages back CNKS was asking about parts suppliers and got quite a list along with some opinions. I have had some problems with aftermarket parts, so I tend towards my local IH dealer. They are more expensive to start with.

Phillip,

Put the pop-ups in 'er. It will make an entirely different tractor out of it. Almost a 50% increase in power.

Wish I had your energy or I would do it too. :>)

Allan
