My 674 D239 engine is in need of an overhaul - poor starting, oil blow by, crankshaft seals etc. I have been offered a 784 engine (D246 - I think) Can I simply swap engines or is there more involved. I was hoping this will be easier than an overhaul, assuming the 'new' engine is in better condition than my own.

Hi Gerry, my I&T shop service manual sort of indicates that the 684 D239, 784 D246, 884 D268
are all the same block except for bore and stroke.
D239 has bore 3-7/8" D246 3-15/16" both have 5-1/16" stroke, D268 has bore 3-15/16" and stroke 5-1/2".

We had a 674D for about a year and traded it for 684D with T/A as I can remember the fuel filters were in different locations. 674D had 1 canister fuel filter on left front and 684 had 2 CAV fuel filters on right side. Maybe if you have a late production 674D they may be the same.

So there may be some minor differences in plumbing but engine casting should bolt up.

Maybe Bernard le mecano from Quebec will answer he has worked on all these models.

Lets us know if it works.
Good luck

Hi,Gerry and JB2, you can interchange the engine, the pipe from the fuel tank, right side, have not the same lenght. But you can fix it. The 246 have more torque then the 239. Bernard le mécano Québec Canada
