I own several La and Lb engines. If I remember correctly, the mag drives off of the cam. So the direction of rotation on the mag is the same as the flywheel. Turn the engine over slowly with the plug wire off until the impulse snaps(this removes tension from the impulse spring). Then take the mag out being careful not to let the gear turn. Turn the gear one tooth in the opposite of the way the flywheel turns, reinstall and check. There are two marks on the flywheel:EX and DC. The DC mark should be straight up when the impulse snaps. You can email me if you have any questions.kharbin (at) nctv.com ..replace the (at) with @ Good luck Kevin

If it is an IH LB engine you will need to take the mag loose and move the timing 1 tooth at a time until you get it right. Just look at the position it is in now and the direction of rotation and ajust form that point. Mine did the same thing when I got it but workes good now.

Dexter,

On most one lung engines you need to hold the compression release untill it is spinning. It needs the enertia of the flywheel to carry it over tdc. I don't know what that one has for comp release, many of the small ones you just hold the intake valve open while cranking. Remove the crank and THEN let go of the valve.

You can retard the magneto just like on a tractor.

The magneto may need to be serviced though as probably has centrifugal advance which may be stuck in the advanced position. Unless someone has messed with the timing, I'd start with the advance.

Try posting your engine under the Stationary
Engines forum on this board. This is IHC, and if our tractors hit-and-miss, it's usually
the sign of a big problem
