Thoughts on Farmall Cub?

Found a nice early model Cub (I am thinking early 50s or prior) for sale locally. I have never thought much of a Cub, but this little thing fires right up with no choke, runs great and is in real solid condition. Has been about 75% restored. Has a small belly mower on it.

My dad and I are both considering it but wanted opinions on the Cub from the rest of ya. Don't really plan on working the little thing hard, but would like to know what they are capable of.

The answer depends on what you want the Cub for. I do mow with a Cub and use it to haul a trailer for light chores. The Cub is under powered and to light in weight for any real heavy work.

The Cub is a fun little tractor. Very economical.

Cubs are great little tractors as long as you don't change impliments. They are not easy to change. If you want a mower, leave it on. To take the mower off and put a plow on, it will take an hour.

They are great to use. Of course they are for light work, but I've got two and need more.

Like somebody said, after 50 years they don't depreciate much.

buy it right, you can always sell it, if the guy wants an arm and leg for it, don't buy it.

They are just about the best tractor ever built for what they were designed to do. I have four Cubs working on a full-time vegetable farm, scuffling veggies, hilling potatoes, pulling planters, clipping pastures even leveling fill. There is not many machines that can work a day on two gallons of gas. My neighbour always laughs at me when he passes me on the highway with his $145,000 deere (my road gear is not too fast) but I wonder if his beast will still be a viable piece of farm equipment in 50 years. I just love those old girls. It won't depreciate, and doesn't take much room in the shed, GO GET 'ER TODAY!!!!

My son watched one sell yesterday in Giltner,Ne. It was a 50's something with belly mower and brought $2350.00.I'd love to have one myself but I don't see it happening in the near future. John.

Brian,
I"m about 66.67% through restoring a 1959 Cub I bought around Thanksgiving a year ago. I am having a great time tinkering with it, ALMOST completed with priming the chassis. A fun little tractor to work on. Prior to teardown, I mowed with it some this spring. They aren"t the most powerful machines around (+/- 8hp), but for finish mowing of short grass they do a really good job. It ain"t no bushhog, though. And they"re great for light utility hauling around. One of the nice things is that they seem to hold their value. If, after purchase, you decide it"s not for you, you should be able to recoup your investment, assuming you didn"t pay too much for it in the first place.

I know they are very low rated in power, but that 10-12 hp Cub has a lot more power (torque?) then a 22 HP lawnmower.

They are a good little mowing machines but for some reason they seem to have dropped off in price quite it a bit the past year or so - at least in my area. I contribute it to the Yuppies having enough money to buy $4000-$15000 compact tractors and not wanting to bother with antiques that don't have cup holders and require a little mechanical upkeep.
