I swear, somebody could make a million dollars if they started reproducing 300/350U steering boxes.Mine is very loose. The side adjustments have been turned in previously about all they can be,and while checking for a fill plug I noticed someone installed a 45degree grease fitting with which they probably pumped the case full of chassis grease.I tried pumping in more, but I could have probably pumped in a couple tubes at least...there is an equal amount of slop in both pitman arms.I hate to buy a used, worn out box for fear of the same thing happening.
Somebody needs to sell rebuilts or new ones.....

There's is another adjustment on the box. The bolts that hold the two halves of box together can be loosened and adjusted back or forth to mesh the gears tighter. When you get your manual it will explain this much better than me. Sometimes the bearing on worm gear is worn also.

I have a manual steering box I just took off, I replaced it with a power steering one, I don't believe this tractor ever had a loader on it. It had very little free travel. Now I don't know if anyone has made any adjustments on it. But it worked fine, I plan on putting on a loader so I wanted P/S. Anyway if your interested let me know
Wes

Paul: I am hardly an expert on the steering of my own 300U, but I improved things a lot by adjusting the steering drag links. Now if I could just figure out how to plug the fluid leak coming from under the steering box my 300U would be ready to paint.

Good luck.

Dennis, I'll bet the fluid leak on your box is the expansion plug on the bottom.Box will have to be removed to fix it though!

Its definitely not a mistadjustment of the tie rods or pitman arms....when one wheel is off the ground (with a floor jack),it wobbles around freely. There is some modest play at the forward tie rod end,but the majority is all inside the box (inside, past the tie rod and pitman arm). Its 50 years of wear with a loader attachment, and from what I learn the past 10 years of its life has been hard dirt/rock work. Before that it was in some sort of manufacturing business where they scooped up piles of somewhat light materials. If only the 2nd owner hadnt done to it what he did...

Paul - Take the box off and tear it apart. Replace the bronze bushings that hold the steering arms, and check the wear on the pin that slides back and forth in the sector groove. It'll likely be worn, and you can build it up with weld and machine it back to fit your groove. That SHOULD take 90% of the slop out of your unit. It will cost you some bucks for seals and gaskets, though.
