My chore tractor is an IH 504 diesel. Starts fine on the glow plugs in moderate weather, but hard to start below freezing. I'm in western Washington, where winter lows are usually in the 20's, so lots of tractors have never had a block heater system, and this one doesn't. Any suggestions on what kind to get? Was there a factory setup that might still be available in aftermarket form? Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks for the good info. Hugh's post reminded me that somewhere I have a circulating type heater that I took off an AC D17- I'm going to try to find it and see if I can make it work.

Hi Mike, Here's the toll free number for Phillips&Temro. 1-800-328-6108. They have a large assortment of engine heaters. Those diesels
will start like summer time when you preheat them,
just ask the Russians. Hal

Mike: The one Bob speaks of is good, and probably all you need for the temps you speak of. That engine is just 2/3 of the 282 used in 560 and 656. I used circulating tank type on my 656, 560 and a Deere I had. You need only plug the tank type in, couple hours before needing tractor. I was also dealing with much colder temps. Just another suggestion. You just plumb the tank type between block drain and one of the ports on the head. On the 282 those were both on injectors and pump side.

CNH can probably fix you up, here's some info from Phillips-Temro, a block heater brand a local auto supply can probably order.

504 gas or diesel, engine mfd. 1964 or later. Part #3100054, 600 Watt 120 Volt 1-5/8" diameter, Install in place of right center block plug. Point element DOWN.

Costs $18.86 at my local auto parts store.
