What type of motor oil do you use on a IH 606 221 gas engine?

I just changed all the fluids on it and put in 5 W 30

I use 15-40 because it is what I have on hand for my diesel tractors. For the ordinary guy i allways recomend the same oil he uses in his car or pickup which is probibly 5 w 30. No sense keeping more than one kind of oil around.

While I am thinking about it, When I got my 230 I put strait ND 30 wt in it because that is pretty much all they had when the tractor was made. Then I talked to the old owner and he had been running 10-30 HD regular modern stuff, so I changed it to that.

IT might be my imagination, But the tractor seems to smoke more at start up now, than it did when I had the old time oil in it.

After 5 min or so, it clears up to normal.

Is there any connection?

Radny

Old ND oil (SA Rating) has no friction reducing additives like most all modern oils have gained thru the years.A ND will heat up more, break down due to heat faster, and will not conserve fuel.It also wont float internal crap to the oil filter, the heaviest junk will stay put or drop to the bottom (the pick up screen).Basically, with only a few exceptions, there is little need anymore for ND oil.Do your engine a favor and only feed it the best modern oils you can find. As far as going to synthetics (if you're tempted),I wouldnt. If the engine was rebuilt or re-sealed you might not have a problem, but synthetics dont get along too well with 50 year old seals....
