Hey guys,
I"m about ready to restore my grandpa"s Farmall A. This will be my first restore project. I"d like to know which book has the most information for restoring this tractor. I"ve seen "Antique Tractor Bible", "How to Restore your Farm Tractor", and "How to Rebuild and Restore Tractor Engines". Which would be the best choice? Any other suggestions?

I'm just finishing up restoring a 46 A and I have all the books mentioned and then some. Since I didn't know diddly about mechanics or engines I needed all the help I could get. The most useful books were the Antique Tractor Bible, the I & T shop manual and the official parts catalogue.

Go ahead and buy the books, along with what Cliff recommends. I have the ones you mention, seldom use them, but rely on the IH manuals all the time. Such books are interesting reading, but with the exception of Guy Fay's excellent books, mostly just make money for the publisher, and to a lesser extent, the author. Of the ones you mentioned the engine repair book is probably the best, perhaps because I'm not a mechanic.

My list would include the factory style parts and repair manuals as well as Guy Fay's Letter Series book since it goes into great detail how the factory painted and decaled tractors. As far as the "How to" books related to restoring tractor's those that I've glanced through have not impressed me very much. Successful Farming magazine put out a restoration guide in it's Ageless Iron series a few years ago and it's pretty good but it doesn't go into alot of details.
