The 460 replaced the 450...right? How do the two tractors compare...specs, performance, etc.? It seems the 450 gets a lot better reviews than the 460. I always enjoy you folks' responses. Red is my second choice! Thanks, Glenn F.

560 replaced 450, both based on M chassis design. 460 replaced 350, both based on H chassis design.

I happen to be one person that thinks the 460/560 tractors were a huge improvement over the 350/450. I also think that the 460/560 models are my favorite farmalls. If you have ever done general farm work back in the 70's you couldn't ask for handier chore tractors. I also prefer narrow front ends. I don't think they look good at all with wide. Just my 2 cents.

When I was at college my dad bought a 660 to add to the 460 Wheatland and SMD. The 660 with its 282 pulled the butt off anything in the community. The local dealer's service forman was great for playing with the pump timing and fuel and could he make them work, the 660 would turn 95 HP on the pto. The 460 was overated for drawbar work but fine for pto. The SMD is refurbished and still on the farm, 52 years old, 18000 hours 30 years ago and two majors, sleeves etc, tranny and diff bearings.

Glen you have read the other posts and they are right. I have a 460D, and had a400D with a 450 kit in it. The 400 would whip the 460 on drawbar, and the 460 would whip the 400 on PTO. The biggest difference was on PTO. If I remember right the 400D was 54 HP, and the 460D was 52HP. The 400 would out lug the 460 bad.

The 460 is the descendant of the 350. If you have the opportunity to get a 450 and 460 side-by-side, look at the rear end, transmission and axle castings of each. In comparison, the 460 is a scrawny-looking dude compared to the beastly-sized iron in the 450.

We have a 400 and a 460. In working trim, the 400 out-weighs the 460 by roughly 1000#.

Glenn: Another item that happened along the way, IH added a tractor to the lineup. The 00 series had been 100, 200, 300 and 400. 30/50 series started out as 130, 230, 350 and 450. Midway through that production a new tractor was added, Utility only, but called 330 and was slightly less hp than the 350.

When the 40/60 series came along this new tractor was still there and the two larger tractors got added hp. Now the lineup was 140, 240, 340, 460 and 560. The 340 being almost the same tractor as the 330, but now available in both Farmall and Utility, as well as having a diesel option. This is how I always reconciled the move. The 300 and 350 had seen substancial power increase from days of the old H. 200 and 230 were not a lot more than the old C, thus there was becoming quite a gap in there. Since the 350 was pushing 40 hp and the new 6 cylinder replacment was going to be 45 hp, something was needed to fill the gap. The 330 and later the 340 did that, in the low 30 hp class. It also put 5 tractors in a lineup that had been 4 for a lot of years. Started in 1939 with A, B, H and M. That my friend was the IH predicament, as I see it.

The 460 replaced the 350, the 560 replaced the 450. Seems people either love or hate the 460/560. I've never really heard any significant complaints about the 350/450.

The 460 did not replace the 450. It was another crazy IH naming thing, it makes sense with the explanation. Here goes.

You start out with the 350 and the 450. The replacements were known as the 360 and the 460. You stick a new engine in each, much more horsepower. The folks at IH decide, because each has more horsepower, to rename the tractors up a little. The 360 became the 460, and the 460 became the 560.
