Glenn: Another item that happened along the way, IH added a tractor to the lineup. The 00 series had been 100, 200, 300 and 400. 30/50 series started out as 130, 230, 350 and 450. Midway through that production a new tractor was added, Utility only, but called 330 and was slightly less hp than the 350. When the 40/60 series came along this new tractor was still there and the two larger tractors got added hp. Now the lineup was 140, 240, 340, 460 and 560. The 340 being almost the same tractor as the 330, but now available in both Farmall and Utility, as well as having a diesel option. This is how I always reconciled the move. The 300 and 350 had seen substancial power increase from days of the old H. 200 and 230 were not a lot more than the old C, thus there was becoming quite a gap in there. Since the 350 was pushing 40 hp and the new 6 cylinder replacment was going to be 45 hp, something was needed to fill the gap. The 330 and later the 340 did that, in the low 30 hp class. It also put 5 tractors in a lineup that had been 4 for a lot of years. Started in 1939 with A, B, H and M. That my friend was the IH predicament, as I see it.
