My 656 has a loud tick at all rpm It sounds like it is the lifters on number 5 or 6 cylinder I have adjusted the tappets to .027 The rocker arms do not all have the same oil flow and the third one from the back does not put out enough to keep the valve oiled.Could the valve be sticking? oil pressure is 50psi

Bob: I can tell you 656 diesel will make quite a noise with a bent valve push rod. Don't ask why but it sounds far worse when your in front of tractor. I went to field to once to give message to my operator. Standing out front as he approached I thought the tractor was going to blow up. You could only notice it as a ticking sound from side or in operators seat. I called the dealer, he said check the push rods. Sure enough that was the problem.

If the valve has worn into the contact "face" of the rocker arm, you will not be able to get an accurate lash reading with a feeler gauge, but it could be checked with a dial indicator.

Hi Bob,

Loud "clacking" sound? Maybe an injector?

Allan
