So, I was in Autozone the other day and saw no less than 5-6 "Smoke Away" or Smoke Be Gone" type products that claim to eliminate blow-by and thus smoke. How valid are these claims and how do they help or hurt the engine? Thanks Ramon

I bought the same thing for my 300 that was smoking real bad! It did not not stop it completely but cut it down by at least 90%.

Jim, I am over in Durham with my Farmall 100 (and its ever growing collection of implements) and a garden full of Bermuda grass I am fighting heartily. If you are ever Piedmont way, drop by. As for the smoke, I just get a little white smoke out of the crankcase breather under a very heavy load. Nothing serious and I would ignore it but when I saw these miracle potions at Autozone, I had to ask the knowledgable gents on this board for some opinions. If it can't hurt my engine, then I'll probably try it out. Nip it in the bud, if you will. Ramon

Ramon, I use a 140 and super A in tobacco and i don't remember ever seeing any white smoke from mine. It almost sounds like water vapor. I would be tempted to try some marvel mystery oil. I used to use this in carbuerated(sp?) vehicles once in a while. I just poured it into the carb. It looks like you are spraying for bugs when you do this. The motor must be reved up to keep it running. I am not sure how you would get it into the carb of a 100. Maybe take the air intake hose off and shoot or squirt a small amount into the carb for about a minute then let the engine die on its own. Let it sit for a while so the oil can clean the upper engine parts. You would have to put it into a spray bottle of some kind. You can also run the mtstery oil in the crankcase. It might be worth a shot if only for your peace of mind. Merry Christmas. I live near Colfax, east of Greenaboro. I have a brother in Clayton and he works in Raleigh. Maybe our paths will cross sometime.

If you've got a Farmall : ) chances are good you may have stuck rings. I've had good "luck" with MMO or ATF in the gasoline and oil freeing stuck rings. If you can free stuck rings the additive is almost as good as an overhaul.

But if you had a stuck engine and jerked it to free it, you may have broken rings and they take a really special snake oil to fix, usually involving time mixed with pictures of dead presidents spread evenly over the engine.

I have not had much experience with these products. Just wondering where in NC you were located. I am near Greensboro.

Back when I was just a teenager I had an old chevy that kinda liked to burn oil. Since I had no money for an overhaul, I tried just about all of the products that promised to stop the oil burning and believe me, even 35-40 years ago there were plenty of products to choose from. The results of all this is that I should have put the money I spent on all that snake oil into a cookie jar and saved up for a proper engine rebuild, none of that snake oil improved the oil consumption, not even a little bit.

I have an F-20 that blows smoke rings out the exhaust. My guess is the valve seats are so worn. Therefor it burns alot of oil. So I dump in a can of Smoke Be Gone every once in a while. Just remember to add regular oil as well! If a fella always added smoke be gone and never any motor oil, eventually the entire oil pan would be filled with smoke be gone. ha ha. Has not hurt my tractor... Helps? I see a little improvement, slightly less smoke. But, I say screw those products. If I did not drive it only in parades I would regrind the valves.

They are usually just thick oil.
The Moreys or Lucas stuff is different though. It works decently.
