Just replaced the fan assembly on the A. Warmed her up and now it seems to me she is running hot. I had to pull the radiator and take off the top inlet port on engine to get the stripped bolt off of tge fan . Looked in manual. Seems their is no water pump and they call the cooling "thermospin". Should I not worry about the cooling system or is their something I should be aware of? Wondering why their is no temp. guage on the two A's I have. My M.D has the guage.

Some Super As had temperature gages. However, these were the distillate or kerosine tractors and were only to tell you when the engine was hot enought to switch to distillate and when to open the radiator shutters. You can put a temp gage on yours, but if all is working, it will not tell you much, as the location for it is at the bottom of the radiator and with the thermosyphon system as long as you have a clean radiator and good air circulation this location will nearly always be cool even when the tractor is working pretty hard. If the tractor is only making gurgling noises after you shut it off and the lower radiator elbow is cool to the touch when running, I expect you are OK. If it is boiling over when running, then you may have clogged passages in the block and need to clean it out.

The temperature gage was available as a separate option on the gasoline tractors. It was part of the shutter attachment and may have also been available by itself.

Yes, there are always exceptions. I was stating what I believed to be the primary use of the temp gage. I expect few gasoline tractors had it, and few gasoline tractors would have had radiator shutters. Those things were primarily for the distillate/kerosine tractors.

Dente: Just one other item Dave didn't mention, after all these years you can have some build up in water jacket impeeding that flow. A water pump can be added, however that may not completely cure the problem. You still may not get good circulation around all cylinders.

There are aftermarket temp gauges can be added. I have never bothered with one as these little tractors have gone successfully for 50 years without.

Now if you are concerned about the gurgleing and bubbling going on after you shut tractor off, don't worry about it, your Super A or A have been doing that since new. To alleviate that somewhat let your tractor idle until it cools down some before shutting it off.

Your A has a "Thermosyphon" cooling system. It works by the convection currents of heated water. hot water leaves the engine out the top to the radiator, then cools in the radiator to sink and displace the water in the bottom of the engine and start over again.

For it to work, the radiator water level has to be up almost to the neck. Also don't forget to make sure your fan belt isn't slipping.

And mix your antifreeze with water before adding or filling radiator. Ask how I know!

Ray, Well when I filled the radiator I added the water followed by the antifreeze. Don't tell me I might have made a bad move doing that. What is the problem with that?

The thermosiphon depends on the difference in density between hot and cool coolant. If you don't mix your antifreeze and water, you are introducing another density gradation that is even greater than the thermal density gradient. If the antifreeze and water don't mix sufficiently, that density gradation will inhibit circulation. I don't know if you can ruin an engine that way, as the mix will start circulating (or erupting) when the water starts to boil, but probably not worth the risk.
