I need to replace the housing containing the counter rotating gears below the crankshaft between #2 and #3 pistons. there are two gears which mesh into each other in this housing and they will mesh with a gear above them on the crankshaft. There apears to be a very small punch mark on the crankshaft gear but no match marks on the small counter rotating gears.
How do I time these gears with what apears to be no match marks.

Hi Ian, place the cylinder 2 on tdc and you can see a punch mark on crankshaft gear. It have 2 punch marks on one gear of the balencer housing for timing with the crankshaft gear. Normally when the 2 piston is on top, you put the housing in place ( counter weights in down position) and it,s ok. Don't start engine with out timing of the balencer or the housing will be broken by shaking. Also, put new O rings for the lube. Check the lube pressure after the job, if it low, may be the cam bushings have to much clearance. The low lube pressure will worn the balencer. Bernard le mécano Québec Canada

Sorry I forgot to mention the tractor is a international 674.
Please give me a constructive answer so i can get this machine back to work. there is a small mark on the crankshaft gear but no mark on the smaller counterrotating shafts beneath it. I dont want the tractor to shake to bits.

Are you working on a IH diesel like a WD-9 ? This is the oil pump with counter weights that have to be timed.

The John Deere 3010s and 3020s are the only tractors I am familiar with that have such a set-up. I am sure that there is a mark on the gear that meshes with the crankshaft, but it's been at least 30 years since I had one apart. This assembly serves to balance the engine. You do not want to leave it out.

And Rusty,

Don't get it out of time!!! The thing will absolutely shake that engine apart.

Yep, that's what the boys at the JD dealer where I worked many moons ago told me. Apparently they tried it once, just once.
