Hello fellows. i'am new to this oliver site...anyway here is my situation, i need a good tractor for clearing a 3/4 mile driveway with blower. i now have a WD45 with a 7' blower and it goes too fast in reverse and the 7' blower should be about 6' so the tractor can handle it. although the oil clutch is real handy. i can't afford a john deere right now and some farmer said the other day what you should have is an oliver 77 or 88 i think he mentioned. it has 2 speeds in reverse and i think he said the transmission is all hydro. if this is a good unit to have what can i expect to pay? also is a international a good unit to have? say 504 or whatever...something around 35 to 60 hp.

thanks in advance, Gary r. voigt

I have a 1966 544 Hydro -- This machine does a spectacular job of throwing snow -- I run a 7'-10" blower (I had it extended) and it handled every storm throw'n at it so far with no problems.

Gary, As you know the moisture in the snow detirmines the HP required. I have a 7ft. single stage on my 1650 gas with the under drive. Some times I have to slip the clutch.

IMHO: Ideal outfit for blowing snow if mostly doing long driveways:Farmall 656 Diesel, gear drive, pulling (yes pulling) an Erskine drive- ahead 8 foot blower. You never tire of the sound of that 6 cylinder engine. Lots of speed choices. When your friends ask what you will do if a huge dump of snow comes overnight (supposedly you won't be able to put the tractor through it)Just tell them you'll call them for help.I've used a 656 w/ similar blower for 20 years. That high tractor will go through a lot of snow.If necessary, raise the blower to the top and drive the laneway first. The ruts will act like railroad tracks.....Superman

Allan: Take a look at this link:www.erskineattachments.com . They know snow in Minnesota. My blower is a 31 year old George White 2 stage drive-ahead model,no longer available. My neck thanks me every time I use it.....Superman

1) This is the Farmall web site.
2) Our old Oliver 77 had two speeds in reverse, but that was a manual transmission. My dad has (another) a running, decent metal, gas, 77 sitting in the shop. He wants $1200- for it - to give you an idea of price - central Iowa. 3) Post a question on the Allis web site. I'd bet one of those guys can tell you how to slow down the reverse speed. 4) How about putting smaller diameter tires on the rear? 5) The WD45 is some where around 40 - 45 HP. If 40 - 45 HP won't handle you snow blower you will definitely need a larger tractor.
6) This should be a good topic for discussion.

Gary,

I'd think that a 656 would be horse enough to handle a 7' blower with ease. Lots of those with hydros out there.

The trouble is those darned hydros. :>)

I have a 544 gas (50 PTO hp) that runs a 7 foot blower just fine. It is the hydrostatic drive so gear choice is not a problem, but a little noisy in the cold. I also built a front mount for a 7 1/2" Meyer snow plow and pump that works great. If you look at the 500 and 600 series IH tractors they will fit your needs.

IH,

That's kinda what I always thought.

I don't own a big tractor blower (wish I did), just this little 4' thing on one of my lawn mowers. It is only 12 horse and it is a snow eating fool. It'll blow 2 feet of snow clear across the darned hiway.

Always did think those horsepower requirements were a bit high on the blowers. Dunno.

Hi Scotty,

No, the only muscle I have is in my head, or so I'm told....lol

The little guy is on a "over-center" kind of an arrangement. Real easy to lift and a whale of a lot of fun to operate.

I just love throwing snow from my yard up and out into the roadway; specialy when all the cars are going by on their way to work. Gotta watch out for the gravel tho; some a these people get a little testy on a cold winter's morn! :>)

We need the moisture, but I hate the darned snow!!

LOL. The snow here comes with wind and sweeps the ground clean.

I use a Super M with a 3pt. hitch to run an Erskine 7 foot blower. I run the SM at about half throttle and it seems to work very well.
