Sickle Bar mower questions

Will a 5 foot cutter bar (my assumption is that this is the whole assembly that pivots off the mower body) and a 6 foot cutter bar interchange on a sickle mower body. I was told that back in the day, you could tell the dealer and they would put on whatever cutter bar length you requested (5, 6 or 7 ft) but I wanted to make sure. Second question is what do I need to replace on the cutter bar if I am restoring it, besides the knife sections and the ledger plates. Are there any other consumable parts? Are there any parts on the main body of the mower that are consumable? Thanks

Ramon

If the cutter bar is from the same manufacturer and will bolt on, it will most likely fit. I've mixed different brands and you have to sometimes shim, drill, and grind it to make it fit right.

You may want a whole new knife if the backer bar is worn badly. Bent, cracked, and damaged guards should be replaced if you plan to use it much.

Check the skid plates underneath, they may be wore out or more likely rusted out.

Lots of mowers have wear plates (to keep the backer bar and sections off the cutter bar) and hold downs to keep the seckle from riding up. These are also high wear items.

Ramon: Which model of mower are you speaking of here? If it is the SA, 100 side mount C-22, IH dealers would install 5 or 6 foot bars but very reluctant to put 7 foot on them. That little mower just wouldn't stand the side draft. There was also no break away.

All of the rear mounted, semi- mounted, trailer and larger side mount were available in 5, 6 and 7 foot models. It was very rare to see these in 5 or 6 foot, after mid 1940s. I believe there were also some 9' models, allthough I've never seen one.

The wood pitman, the drive belt, universal joints on the PTO drive shaft. A semi-mounted mower has a tire (older ones were steel).
Replace the grease in the gear box; most likely GL 90.
