Swapping Fast Hitch from 1959 to 1965 IH 140

Recently bought 1959 140 with fast-hitch but the tractor is going to need a fair amount of work (paint, hydraulics, clutch). Ran across a 1965 IH 140 in great shape but does not have fast-hitch.

1. I assume the single point fast hitch for 140 stayed the same across the entire model run. Is that a correct assumption?

2. Anyone out there done a fast-hitch swap? It looks like a one-day job. Is it or is it a modify parts to fit the individual tractor kind of job that winds up being a several day chore?

Bill: There is only one possible little kink you may run into. That is the spring assist mounted on left side of tractor. When I say may, it could be that by 1965 this problem was corrected. The older 130, 100 and indeed SA did not have tab on rockshaft for mounting that spring, if tractor was not equiped with fast hitch. I have changed a few of these over the years. Some we just set the entire touch control unit on, while on others we changed rockshaft unit. You take a look and compare your rockshaft where that spring hooks on both tractors. That is the only snag you may run across.

Hugh,
I'm glad you brought that point to my attention. My 140 does not have that tab. As I recall, my Dad's 1965 140 had a tab/
backstop sort of piece. I may need to look at a later model 140 and copy the piece at a machine shop. The piece that transitions the horizontal hydraulic movement (the long rod running along the fender and gearbox) is about 1" in diameter and has some wear, but gets the job done. The tractor does not have as much lift range as what I recall my Dad's tractor having. In fact, when getting the implements on the moving trailer, it barely got the disk harrow or the turning plow high enough to get onto the trailer. I may have to have a machine shop make me a sleeve to slip onto the horizontal rod ahead of the rockshaft spring meeting point so as to get another 4 or 5" of lift. I'm going to have to also pull the lift section apart and install new seals as the former owner said he usually filled the hydraulic oil once or twice a year (I don't like the sound of that!!).

Bill, If you go to the machine shop to get that fix, let me know. I would love to see a picture of it so I can understand how it works. I would love to get a bigger range of life on my 100. Thanks Ramon

Bill, I was told that you could elevate the height of the hydraulic lift by moving the collar forward (toward the gas tank) on the horizontal arm. The collar should be at the back end of the horizontal arm and have a little set screw on it that you can use to move the collar up or down the horizontal arm. Hugh ,does that sound right? Ramon

Ramon: Not sure I follow you exactly. My take is the sliding collar allows hitch to float when moved foreward. The big nut on the end of the horizontal shaft will adjust height hitch will lift.

Another item I will point out is the two position holes on rear rockshaft, where the horizontal bar hooks. The bottom hole will give you greater lifting range, but the top one will increase the lift capacity.
