Well I finaly got my first tractor I ever owned to my house from my grandmothers house, everything went good. I started looking at after I unloaded it and I noticed the carb. was missing and it only turned over a quarter turn,(I think the mice found a home out of the rain, and the intake was the front door), OH I forgot to mention that it was in a fire and the glass and the rear tires are gone, but the metal and tin work still looks good, and has a FARMHAND, so I think I will offer her $100.00, or is that an insult? She knows it is'nt worth much.
Thanks

You should never have said it was your grandmother. You should have said it was your miserly neighbor.

As far as value goes, the loader is going to make the difference. No matter who you buy it from, in all fairness, a non-running M is worth no more than $500. You can buy a running, driving M that doesn't look too bad for $1000 any day of the week. Throw in the fact that your's has been through a fire. What are you going to have in it by the time you get new tires on it and have it up and running? I would say give $100 for just the tractor, then make a seperate deal on the loader. Farmhand loaders are pretty heavy-duty, if it is in good shape, $100 would be ripping her off.

This is your dear Grandmother, and you are only going to give her $100??? Don't open your shirt, or your heart will fall out.

Dave, Oh that was a cruel line... but I'm goin' to remember it! This is a difficult issue, buying something from a relative and putting an agreeable value to it. I'm thinking that a person (the buyer) is better off to ask what the owner thinks is fair. The worth of an old (yet restorable) tractor may be a tough call for a new enthusiast. Ripper's Grandmother may be just tickled that he wants to restore some old family history. I bet she will be very supportive of his project. The other scenario may be that the old machine just continues to sit in it's current state and in another twenty-five years, nobody sees its worth. Good eye Ripper!

It's your grandmother.

Unless she is wealthy, offer her all you can afford. $1,000 is not too much.

If you give her $50 will you crow about what a good deal you got?

If she has money and you don't, $100 gets you started on restoring a nice tractor, and your cousins know it is yours.

As a parent, if you offered any money at all I would break out in tears because then I would know you were brought up right. If you're struggling to make ends meet my guess is she'll refuse the money and all will be well with her. If she's struggling to do the same then maybe you insist she take the money or do some nice things for her and my guess is you probably do now. 2cents. I grew up with a 51 M nice tractor, my first VOAG project.
