Have an M with 4" sleeves and pistons. There is no wear ridge in the top of the sleeves. Engine was seized when i got it, but removed head and took little effort to free. New head gasket, to specs, got it running and running well. Leaked some oil from manifold side of head right below exhaust riser of #2. Constant drip of water from oil pan once oil drained. #2 cyl had water in it when i removed head. So there must be a crack in head leaking into engine, and into #2 combustion. I have water in block now to see if sleeve also cracked.

All 4 firecrater pistons rock back and forth in the bore, almost like they are worn, but there is no wear groove in sleeve. Id estimate 1/8" total travel.

What am i looking at here, complete rebuild, repair head?

I would suggest getting an inside micrometer and checking the cylinders for wear with that. You can’t always depend on piston movement as aluminum pistons (which firecraters are) expand when they warm up. Another thing to consider is if someone overhauled it shortly before it was shut off, the ridge may have been removed at the time and the engine may not have run long enough to wear in another one. The micrometer will tell the story. I favor the complete tear down and have the block magna-fluxed, that way you will know what you have for sure when you’re done with it.

You say the engine was seized, and you freed it up. I think that "slop" you are experiencing is most likely from the rings still seized in the grooves. Looks like a complete tear down is in order.
