The actual number is stamped on the tag -- you should be able to see that even if nothing else is visible. Unless you mean they ripped the tag off and threw it away.

Curious, how was the serial tag destroyed by a paint job?

Garland: Actually as Tom said engine serial number will be very close, up to serial number 310300, after that there becomes a spread of 2,000 between tractor and engine serial numbers. Engine serial number is stamped on a flat machined surface just under number 1 spark plug.

To see if you have an original engine go to casting codes. They are the numbers on each casting, separated by what looks like round head screws cast right into part. It gives the day and month by number and year by letter. X is 52, Y is 53, Z is 54 and A is 55. V was not used You can go both ways from that. If your codes are same or close, good chance tractor is original. Codes will actually preceed the manufacture date of tractor by a bit. The 8 separate castings will each have a code so go with the majority.

Hugh thanks a lot,Ill check tommorow,it's got the high and low pedcocks on the oil pan and the breather tube is the small one leading me to beleive it is an early Super A,I bought the tractor just because the gentleman was a life long friend and helped me in the Lodge, thanks again. Garland

I believe the serial number is also on the block behind where the magneto/distributer is. That should work as long as you don't have a replacement block.

The engine and chassis number won't match on a tractor that new. IH ended that practice during the A/B production period.

They match closely until serial number 310300. That is the point when new type block was introduced.
