Sponz, The 4x4 articulated tractors have a very definite place in todays farming. They work well for pulling sub-soilers, one pass tillage equipment, and are very adept at handling no-till equipment. The operation I"m with has 3 4x4"s which could not be replaced with 2WD"s, or 2WD with FWA. A 30 ft no till grain drill loaded with 100 bushel of seed requires both a lot of power and a lot of traction. We use an IH 4568 for that. We also use a 4x4 Massey 1500 to handle a 20 ft no-till grain drill, and a 4x180 white for a 12 row no-till row planter. We also use the 4-180 to haul and power a 500 bu, grain cart. So to answer your question, they may or may not be plain ole junk, but they certainly do the job of some of their more contempory tractors.

The are good tractors that can have alot of power put into them. We set up a pair that had 275+ HP and they worked great! No extra wear on driveline, u-joint chattering ect.

These can be safely set at 250 HP or even run at 300 hp (with a smart operator, NOT a driver). They are good reliable higher hp tractors.

Sponz: I personally think articulated is the wave of the future. I farmed with a Farmall 1066 two wheel drive with duals. I also had a John Deere 540A forestry skidder, about 100 hp, 6 cylinder turbo. 8 speed power shift, same basic chassis as the 7520 just less horses. I never dualed it as I felt it didn't have enough engine, for the added traction. I did a lot of disking with that unit. My opinion these articulated tractors are much more economical on the repair side. You dual a tractor like a 1066 for tillage work, and it will beat the crap out of the front end, put 4 wheel drive unit on there, and you have a lot of moving parts to keep up.

My only problem looking at specs of the 4366 or 86, you are taxing that 466 just a bit too heavy if you equip it with 20.8x38 duals. If you look at most of the big articulateds today, they are being equiped with 600 plus cubic inch engines. This item of matching you engine to your rubber on the ground is not new. Just go back to the SA, 100 versus SC, 200; that little engine lasted a whole lot more hours on the 24 inch tires.

Owned one a long time ago and liked it. Reduce engine RPM's when making sharp turns. Much easier on U-joints.

I think they had 176 HP at the drawbar if I remember reading it right. No clue as to the safe limit. I believe you have got the 10 speed Fuller tranny also. Tell me if I am wrong.

Never drove one. My neighbor had a 4568 V8-800. He called it the "Dinosaur." He replaced a U-joint once a year farming 500+ acres. The V8 had no low end torque but yours has the DT466, which is a hell of an engine. I know a guy that tiles a lot with two 4366s. He's had them for years and he's not poor by a long shot, so I figure he'd upgrade if they were completely junk. That's all I know. Good luck.

What did he have a 4568 for if all he was farming was 500 acres? He must have had an engine problem if he didn't have any low end torque. Once in the while ours would end up on the "little" disk (24' 496) we'd gear it up and run it at idle, no problems with pulling but it was just a little slow with the hydraulics running it that way. Came close to beating the 1466 on fuel economy pulling the same equipment. Our biggest problem was the starter, it was replaced once a year for three years straight (about $700 a crack back in the early 80s), then it ran 5 years without a hitch.

Our local dealer also farmed quite a bit with his family and they ran a 4366. One of his sons claimed it was turned up past 220hp. They ran it that way for about 8 years before it was traded out of the country.

Are we driving the same 4568? We too have installed 3 starters in 3 years. The guy we bought it from actually farmed 360 acres. Oh yes, he went broke. Wonder why?

Why did they have a 4568 on 550 acres? I don't know. I think they had the money so they just wanted a big tractor. Why do guys buy 1 ton dually pickups and then drive them around like cars without ever hauling or towing anything. They just do!

Why would they have a 4568 on "only" 500 acres? It's so they can get the job DONE when it needs to be done! Good farm help ain't exactly cheap, and cheap farm help ain't exactly good.

Reminds me of a service sign in a local dealership:

We do three types of jobs, cheap, quick and good, but you can only have two of the three. A cheap quick job isn't good. A good, cheap job isn't quick, and a good quick job isn't cheap.
