hey guys,
I have a fuel(gas) tank off of a H Farmall for sale and an interested party asked if it would fit a 40 model. I'm wanting to think the tractor I'm pulling it off of is a early 40's model. Are there any differences in the fuel tanks over the years? Thanks!

After reading the other replys I realized that maybe your question was misunderstood by several, including myself. H farmall fuel tanks are all the same as far as how they mount to the tractor. The only difference is the size of the outlet for the sediment bowl, and after late 1939, these are all the same 3/8 inch. Yes, the gas tank should fit.

i have 2 '39 "H" s. both use the odd fastener for the grill but the hood uses the j hook. only difference in tanks is that the 39,s of mine used a smaller outlet (1/4" pipe thread versus 3/8 pipe on thelater ones). had to replace the fuel valve on each and just used some adapters to fit.

I own a Farmall H that was built in June, 1940. It has the grill held on with the dzus fasteners, but the hood is just like any other hood I have ever seen. I have never seen an H hood held on with dzus fasteners.

gary, If the gas tank from your "H" has dzeus fasteners, it will fit only 1939 and 1940 models. This is apparent by the slotted bolts on the hood itself. The later models had "J" hook fasteners, and the recievers on the gas tanks are different than the Dzeus recievers. It would be best to ask the prospective buyer if he has "J" hook or Dzeus hardware.

Ok yall, what is a dzeus fastener? The tank I have has three bolt that are threaded into the bottom of the tank and there is a spring on each bolt. The hood on the H does have the J hook type hold downs on it.

Gary, Dzeus fasteners are sort of like quick couplers but are used to hold sheet metal parts, and allow easy removal. They require a 1/4 turn to either fasten or unfasten. The 39 and 40 Farmalls uses them. Maybe even some very early 41"s but I doubt it. Rather than the "J" hooks, there were four Dzeus bolts with screwdriver slits on the lower four corners of the hood. These went into dedicated recievers, two on the gas tank, and two on the radiator shroud. The later gas tanks did not have these recievers, as they were modified to accept the "J" hooks. The three bolts you refer to on the bottom of the gas tank are mounting bolts for the gas tank itself and have nothing to do with hood fastener issue. If you do have the "J" hooks on the hood and that hood was the mate to the gas tank, then the buyer who has a 1940 model may not be able to use the gas tank you have unless his is "J" hook equipped. A phone call may save a potential problem.

I can't tell you the differences, but they changed at SN 15744, 1940 serials were 10653-52386. I imagine it was the mounting hardware, but someone else will have to answer.
