What weight oil should I use in my H's crankcase and air filter?

For what it is worth, I use Delo 400 30w in summer and 15W 40 in winter. Works fine in my 444.

For what it's worth. My H farmall would hold 60 lbs when cold, after working it awhile it would drop to 40 lbs, this was at full throttle. I was using delo 400 30 wt. I change to Castrol GTX 20w50 and now it holds 60 even when hot, idles at 50. I have no idea why, I have used Delo in everything I own for 40 years with no problems. after what it did with the H, I changed the oil in my old 1954 jeep to castrol 20w50 and it worked on it also. everything else still has Delo and will stay that way unless I have an oil pressure problem. If anyone tries this, post the outcome, which ever way it goes.

30 wt. in the summer.
If you are in the north and use it during the winter use 10w30.

I agree, Sammy. Those who use thick oil as a cure for low oil pressure are only increasing oil pressure at the expense of oil flow through the tighter places. 10W-30 is a good compromise. You get good oil flow when the engine is cold, and more than adequate protection when the engine is warmed up.

Keep in mind the fact that the oil recommended by IH for an H Farmall was the most high tech oil available at that time. Great strides have been made in the years since in the quality and performance of motor oil. If the H Farmall was still being manufactured today, the recommended engine oil would most likely be a multi-weight. Something like a 10w-30, 10w-40, or 15w-40. I use 30wt. detergent in all my Farmalls, only one of them has to run during cold weather, and it is kept inside so it doesn't get exposed to extreme cold until after it is running and warmed up a bit. Nothing wrong with using multi weight oils.

Yep, nuff said. If you went by the manual, you'd have to go find some 50 year old oil.

The manual probably says 30W, as does my SA manual but you gotta figure a 50-something year old engine has lost some of its newness and bearing clearance so a little heavier oil might be in order.

I disagree partially.
I'd only run non detergent if I knew the tractor had always been run on non detergent and then I'd still drop the pan, scrape out the sludge and start running detergent. A couple short run oil changes with a good detergent oil should give the whole engine the scrubbing it needs to make sure everything is nice and clean inside.
Why subject your machine to nondetergent oil when there are so many good detergent options available?

I think the manual calls for 30 wt. I use 10W40. It is a good idea to get the oil where it is going as soon as possible. You would find lots of useful information in an Operator's Manual.

Do you still use the 30wt in the cold winter months?

Bob
