cub trouble

I have recently come into a '49 cub. It seems like a pretty tight tractor, but I can't get it to crank. It has no starter, but when I'm pulling it with another tractor it runs. When I stop pulling it will slowly go dead or run for a very short time and then go dead. The magneto is working correctly and is timed dead on. It is getting fuel as far as I can tell. Anyone have any ideas? Also, can someone give me a little help on a good starting point for adjusting the carb? Thanks, Beau

You should hear a click when hand cranking the engine. No click, you need to repair the magneto impulse. Without the impulse retarding timing during start up you may (probably) will not get the engine started. When you pull the Cub the engine is turning fast enough to fire at or near the advanced, correct timing for a running engine.

Other than that it sounds like a fuel problem. I would first try some of the gasoline solvents that are added directly to the fuel tank.

Hi, I would check that carburetor for gum deposits. This unleaded gas is just as bad as the leaded gas for gum deposits when gasoline is left in the fuel system for long periods of time without any fuel stabilizer added. Gum deposits will also form in the gas tank too. You may have to disassemble that carburetor and soak it in carb.cleaner. Good Luck, Hal

The tractor did show oil pressure while it was being pulled, but what little time it was running I was too busy trying to keep it running to notice how high it went. I understand that low oil pressure will destroy the engine, but what would low oil pressure mean for trying to get it to start? As far as for when it is running I cannot detect a miss. Seems to be fairly smooth.

thanks for the reply
