I recently installed a new alternator. When the two wires are plugged into the side of the alternator the alternator charges full continuously causing it to get extremely hot. Could the problem be the resistor under the steering column?

Hi Red,

What is your voltage reading?

Normally at full load, the regulator will hold the voltage back somewhere in the 16 to 16.5 volt range. If it is pushing up there towards 18 volts, you've got a short in or at the regulator.

This can sometimes happen if the builder didn't place the insulated screws in at the correct locations when installing the regulator.

Also, how good are your batteries? Are they up to full charge? That regulator is going to push full bore 'til they are full.

Alternators, when working hard, do run hot.

Tryin' to help,

Allan

My 966 has an internal regulator Delco alternator on it. The plug with the two wires is rectangle shaped. Delco also makes an external regulated alternator which has a square plug on the two wires. I’m going to guess here a bit that it is the regulator that is bad, causing the overcharging condition. If you have the internal one, you will need to get a different alternator, if you have the external one, then the regulator (usually a small square black box with four wires coming out of it) will need to be replaced.

I hope this helps, post here again if you still need help.
