H generator info

Hey, I have an H and just put the drive belt on the generator and I have some preliminary questions. It should be a stock 6V system.

The battery on the tractor now is useless, but it should suffice for some tests. I ran the tractor for a little bit, and was getting 9V or so at the battery (the battery only had about .7V), so it seems something was working.

The first strange thing was that there is a jumper between the 'F terminal on frame' and the relay mounting screw. I removed it, and the voltage at the battery went down to about 3.5V. I don't see this jumper in the wiring diagram in the manual, so I'm not sure what to do with it.

The other issue is that the switch doesn't seem to affect the charging rate. L or H settings seem about the same. I don't see any broken wires or anything, so maybe the switch is broken?

It seems better then I was afraid it would be though. So how far am I from having a fully working system? Just one or two wires, or does something sound like its plain wrong?

Thanks

Sounds like you have a good working generator but messed up wiring and a bad 6 volt battery. Here's what I'd do:

1 - Buy a voltage regulator for a late model H (about $35 at TISCO, etc).

2 - Wire up the regulator per the diagram below. (Regulator will take over the function of charge control from the light switch).

3 - Install a new 6 volt battery.

You will end up with a system thats easy on the battery and which will keep it charged.

Sounds like a good plan, but since I don't trust myself to do it right, I'm gonna try and repair the old system. When I wreck that, then I'll try and follow your diagram.

Yours is a good plan also - and cheaper too! Just make sure the LHDB switch works in all positions, that the field resistor the switch is not open circuited, and that the switch and switch box are solidly grounded.

If you do all that and the wiring is correct your generator should work fine!

Make sure the cover of the box where the light switch is located makes proper ground. When on High charge the cover grounds the fields and the jumper would not be needed. IH should have put a grounding strap from the cover to ground.

OK, I understand what the jumper is doing now. I'm playing with it more today, and now its not looking too great. With the RPMs up higher (which I didn't try before), I'm getting between 12 and 16V (and maybe more)! That can't be right. That's with the field grounded. I tried to wire up the lights just to see something work, and they did work until I turned up the RPMs, which of course blew the light bulbs. Can I adjust the 3rd brush to fix that? Or is it just a result of the crappy battery? Or did someone at some point replace the generator with a 12V version (I don't THINK anyone did that).

Also, the L setting on the switch is an open circuit. Seems like the resistor is broken. Is it inside the switch somewhere?

Lastly, the Dimmer coil for the lights doesn't seem to do anything. Its like .8 Ohms. That can't be what its supposed to be, right?

Thanks

yup, when you ground the fields it will full charge. just leave the jumper wire hooked up and you should be fine unless you work the tractor all day and then you might want to unhook it. the switch on the dash was for high and low charge. High chage grounded to the frame. low charge went through the resistor. I run the field wire grounded on a couple of my tractors all the time. it was an old blacksmith trick.
