I need to replace my ammeter (it passes current, but the needle doesn"t move). It"s a Stuart Warner 60-0-60...I"m not sure if it is original or even the correct gauge. When trying to order a replacement, the salesman asked if it was shunted...I have no clue! The leads off the ammeter go to the starter and voltage regulator (manual calls it a relay...has four leads...two to generator, one to ammeter, one to starter switch). I"ve got a three position light switch (no charging positions )Any info is most appreciated!

The basic meter movement is a milliammeter- responds to just thousandths of an ampere. The built-in shunt sends most of the current around the meter- bypasses it- so that the meter is not ruined by high amperage. Maybe your meter movement has failed and the shunt is still intact. Replace the whole thing.

The original ammeter is "self shunted", ie. it does not have an external shunt and separate wiring between the shunt and the meter head.

Unless your Super A has an alternator conversion, recommend you replace the ammeter a 20-0-20 ammeter. Reason is the stock 6 volt system never throws more than about 12 amps thru the ammeter which may not even cause the needle to deflect on a cheap 60-0-60 ammeter.

Ricky,

I think all ampmeters are shunted aren't they?

Besides,

If the thing still passes current, that's a pretty good indicator that the juice is getting around that gauge circuit somehow. :>)

Just guessin',

Allan
