IH 706 PTO had been operating just fine. Put new clutch kit in 3 years ago. Ran 5 foot batwing mower this summer fine. Had ran an auger at idle loading out 4,000 bushels of corn off and on. Needed to pull a new wagon under so I shut the PTO off. It wouldn't start again!!!!! Not even try to. Put some hydraulic oil in the transmission to bring it up to full. Even stuck the air hose in the transmission filler tube in case there was an air lock. Still no PTO.

Now let me give you the complete story. The roll pin which connects the PTO handle to the linkage had sheared earlier this summer. I had just been grabbing the up and down rod to pull it on. Then I would bump it down to shut it off. When I would bump it down it was pretty forceful. Did I eventually break a pin in the valve that connects the external shaft to something internal????? ? Should I pull all of the valve apart????? How does it come apart?? What other things can I check so I don't have to pull the pto unit out?????

Andy,

Hope not, but with all that bumpin' and liftin' of the handle with the linkage being out of time like that, I wondering if maybe you didn't fry those clutches again?

Allan

I would bet that the pin has sheerded or the snap ring came out , this does not happen vary often but it does if you have alot of driveline chatter it can work the clutch pack snap ring out and if you like playen with the farmalls of the newer style then you should have the fitting for the PTO so you can set clutch pressure this is something that you can not guess at . When i rebuild them i always use the 7 and 9 set up from the higher H.P. tractors and set clutch lock up pressure at around 260 to 270 no clutch slippage. Now if you did not check the pressure after rebuild then it is posable that you have fryed them.

In the control valve there is a tiny pin it will break. A lot of the time when the PTO works and the next time it don't it is caused by this pin breaking. To check it pull the plug out on the bottom of the PTO directly below the control valve. Oil will run out so you want to be fast. If the lower end of the control falls the pin is broken. And nothing falls out the little pin hasn't broken and you have other problems with the PTO.

Maybe I read somewhere that the rod (valve) going into the top of the PTO will pull out of the top if the pin is sheared. I think it must be this pin that holds the two together that is causing the problem. Can anyone give me more detail on taking this valve apart from both the top and bottom??? Anything to watch for?? Thanks .. andy

The control valve can only be pulled out the bottom. Have you pulled the plug out of the bottom to see if the little pin has broken?

The first step is the pressure test. You'll need a manual ($20 I&T book works fine), a pressure guage capable of at least 300 psi, and I belive a special fitting from Case-IH. I doubt you broke the valve.

I do believe in the pressure test you mentioned. But, I do not have the fitting or gauge. All that happened from the time it was working to not working was a "good bump" down on the linkage, a "pull up" and probably 1 minute. I never even shut the tractor off. In some previous posts I remember hearing about a ROLL PIN connecting something together in the valve. You gotta remember I was jerking up on the rod to start it and pounding down on the linkage to stop it. Sometimes the wagon was about ready to run over and I would have to give it a "quick" pound down. Whereas,if I would have fixed the pin in the handle it probably would be a more smooth operation. I sort of need to get it operating tomorrow and want to field trouble shoot it. Thanks. andy
