I posted a message a couple of days ago asking if a 1965 IH 656 Utility was a rare tractor. Got some good responses - thanks. Turns out that the gentleman I bought it from was calling it a utility because of the angled front axle. It gives it a shorter wheelbase. The model tag reads I656D - it's not a utility model. I have to say that I'm a little disappointed that I don't own a "rare" tractor, but I didn't buy it for that reason anyway. I'm still learning about IH/Farmall history, so if I ask some dumb questions, please bear with me. Thanks again to the fellas that set me straight. Talk to you all later. ROB

what size tires are on the back? if you have 30" and the angled front axle, you have a true utility. if you have 38" with the angled front axle, you have a high-utility. they're both international models and the tag will say I656 (vs farmall F656), but the hi-utility was the rarer of the 2 utilities. i have 2 hi-utilities- a gear drive and a hydro.

Guess I have a high utility. It's got 38's on the rear. Mine is a gear drive. Thanks for the info. ROB

You have an International 656, not a Farmall 656, doesn't really matter if you call it a "Utility" or not, the numbers I gave you in your original post are correct.

I think there are no "dumb" questions (with some exceptions). Think of it this way...Fixing tractors as a job:). People who do it know all about it. A city person would know nothing about it and think that his question is dumb. What i'm trying to say is: when u want to learn about something u cannot ask a dumb question.

Hey Rob,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think your tractor is as close to a "Utility" as you are ever going to get.

To my mind, IH made the 656 in 3 versions: the "International" like yours, the "Farmall", which was the row crop model and the "Hi Clear".

Don't remember a "Utility" model.

Somebody smack me across the head if I'm wrong?

Allan

Technically, the Hi-clear model was a Farmall, no?

The I656 is commonly referred to around here as the "656 Utility" because that's what it is. All IH utility tractors had the designation of "International."
