I was puttin' up my newly overhauled H when it quit running. I removed the distributor cap and turned the motor over and noticed the rotor was not turning.I thought the gears were stipped, so I pulled the distributor and the gear housing. The gears looked fine so I reassembled it. I removed the no 1 spark plug, felt compression and lined the first mark on the pulley with the pointer. I installed the distributor with the rotor pointing to the no. 1 plug on the cap and when I tried to start it I had to turn the distibutor way cc to just get it to backfire and not run. What is wrong? Does the drive gear have to fit in the keyed slot a certain way or what?

Does anyone know where I can get a new drive gear and distributor gear for an H,the local case-IH dealer wants $160 for the drive gear and $40 for the distributor gear. I see you can get the drive gear on this web site but where do you get a distributor gear?

I had to put a new seal in the distributor on mine. There is a pin that holds the gear at the bottom, you can see it in the parts manual if you have one. See if the pin came out or the like.

Another possiblity is the camshaft drive gear hub worked loose or broke. That'll mess up the valve timing and will cause a backfiring or "no run" situation just as you describe.

Pull the distributor base from the engine and peek inside at the cam gear. If you can move the gear at all with your fingers you found the problem.

I think I would start over here. Why was the rotor not turning? Is the little tab on the rotor broke ? Did you try to turn the tab end of the dist gear while holding the Rotor to see if there was a problem there.? If all that checks I would make sure # 1 is at top dead center compression with a wire or something dont worry about the timing mark. Then look at the timing mark and see if its close and double check #1 on the distributor. Let us know how you make out. JON

Are you supposed to use the first of the two double marks or the single mark to use for tdc. When I put my finger in the no. 1 piston hole, now it is coming up with the single mark and the rotor is 180 degrees off. I set it with the fist of the double marks. I took it apart again cleaned and regreased the drive housing, reassembled and the rotor turns. It fired with no backfire but still does not run. I removed the distributer cap and the rotor was not turning with starter engauged, I moved the distributer back and forth and then it started to turn again. Is the drive gear worn? All the gears on the distributor and drive gear are all intact and look good to me.

You can switch the wires on the cap if its 180 off or you can remove the dist and reasemble it right. But there must be somwthing wrong. Something must be sheared I guess if the rotor doesnt turn all the time . Check the distributor like I said before grab the drive end and the rotor end and try to turn it hard if it slips or skips you need something in the dist. JON

I seems to be jumping time. I line it up on the #1 plug and when I crank it it fires but does not run. When I remove the cap and put it back on TDC the rotor is between the #1 and #2 wire on the cap.P.S. I put the drive gear in and turned the distributor by hand be fore I reassembled it but I did not check for a fine fit or play.
