I can turn my M by hand but a new 6V battery will not turn it, even when attached directly to the starter. The starter and battery are both good and will start my H easily. If I jump with a 12volt battery, the tractor starts right up. It just seems to have too much compression to turn over with the 6V. Previously, I was able to start it with 6V but it turned over very slowly. I am to the stage of thinking I need to convert the tractor to a 12V system. What all would have to be changed to do this and is it advisable. All advice will be greatly appreciated.

The 6 volt battery hasn't gotten weaker since it was first offered for electric starting in 1939. Your cables are most likely the cause of poor starter performance. Get some new 1 or 2 gauge cables before giving up on the 6 volt system.

Wayne:
Tell me where I'm screwed up. I have hooked the battery directly to the starter using heavy duty jumper cables and it still won't go. Seems to me that says it's not my battery cables that are the problem. Someway I have lost your email address; your advice is always appreciated.

I just had the same problem with my "H" 6 volt. I kept trying to crank it over while having my hand on one battery cable or the other...sure enough the negative cable got hottern' a pistol. Replaced neg battery cable and I'm back in business.

If you send me your email I can send you a conversion diagram for the 12 volt system. It's pretty easy to make the switch over. Also, if you are planning on making the switch and are willing to part with your generator, how much would you sell it for? I have one that is about to die.

I converted my SMTA to 12 volts shortly after I got it. The battery was bad so it was as cheap to replace it with 12 volts and my experience with these was that they are slow to turn over. It is also much easier and cheaper to buty 12 volt lights than 6 volt ones. I used a delco alternator with internal regulator, not the 1 wire but the regular ones. I used the wiring diagram from archives supplied by Bob M and turned the bracket upside down as suggested. I would not go back to 6 volt on a bet. This tractor starts good anytime. It may be that the 6 volt will work with proper cables but it is also hard to find a good heavy 6 volt battery these days, especially oe that will fit in the battery box on an M.

Before converting it to 12V, I'd recommend you check all the connections, cables, cable ends etc. 6V works just as good as 12V if everything is clean, bright and tight. Battery cables should be O gauge with no corrosion. Sometimes, the corrosion will get in under the outer coating on the cables where you can't see it. Starter switch contacts are another suspect area to look at. Good luck and if you need, check the archives on this site for some well thought out ways to go about doing a 12V conversion.

If you want to convert it you need to get a one wire gm alternator. Go to a starter /alternator shop and tell them what you want. Remove the old generator and flip the mounting bracket upside down. Grind a little off of the right side of the mounting bracket to allow the alternator to roll in towards the valve cover pan. You will know where when you try to mount the alternator. Bolt in place. Run a wire back to the gauge only reverse the side where it enters the gauge. Install a resistor to the points to drop the voltage to 6 volts. Replace the lights with 12 volt bulbs. Add your 12 volt battery and ground it on the negative side. Good luck-It isn't really hard to do.
